Obviously it depends on the condition of the block, but I'm sourcing a used block to build up and swap out so I curious as it if there is a certain mileage at which these blocks typically need boring due to average wear and tear? I hear a lot of warnings about boring late model blocks that will be turbo charged.

Was Jess's 30 over block on the main page a late or early model block?

If it doesn't need boring are most people just sliding in pistons, rods, and rings, or going through a proper rebuild: getting the block dipped/cleaned, etc?

I never bored my block and it had 160K (miles) on it. Just cleaned the block up by hand and honed it. Put new rings, pistons and bearings in and called her a day.

It seems nagelandy has more milage on his block, but mine had 88,kkk on it and it still had the cross hatch and no ridge ring. Excellent blocks in my opinion. still had it dipped, then i honed it.

Most of the used blocks I'm finding around here are in the 140k to 170K mileage range, so didn't know if I really needed to hold off on getting pistons until I sourced a block and had it checked. Looks like I should be ok assuming I can just clean up the block and use std bore pistions.

Does anyone know if the .030 over block jess has listed making 400hp is a ranger block or older/thicker turbo block?

I would wait with getting pistons, you never know what your going to find when you take that head off.
