this is my first post and i thought that i would make it pretty good for everyone...there are no pics but will in one week building the motor this weekend and will have pictures taken in the process
Truck details:
= 96 ranger standard cab 5 speed with 183,940
the start of my project started with a blowin timing belt...fixed the timing belt and ran like **** so i took it to the machine shop to see what was wrong with it...ended up having two bent valves and a crack in it.
replaced the head with a 92 mustang head that i got a complete n/a motor for $130
out of the mustang motor i used:
= connecting rods
= head (valves included)
= upper and lower intake
= fuel rail
fully built 96 block and head:
= 8-1 compression
= bored .030
= 92 connecting rods
= arp bolts anywhere possible
= felpro 1035 headgasket
= .460 lift comp cam
= esslinger dual valve springs and retainers
= port and polished head with custom valve job
= jess's cheap solution clutch
turbo kit consists of:
= 60# injectors
= garrett t3/t4 turbo with .70 a/r .48 a/r
= -4an telfon oil feed -10an oil drain
= 31x12x3 front mount intercooler with 3" piping
= center mount turbo header
= tial f38 wastegate
= greddy type rz blow off valve
= aem boost controller
= aem wideband
= 255 walbro fuel pump
= 90mm MAF
misc.:
= vacuum distribution block
= 4x4 aluminum custom upper intake
= 4.6 65mm throttle body
= egr delete
= solid rubber mounts
= 2.5" full exhaust with flowmaster 40
= msd coil packs
= taylor spark plug wires
= sct tuned

looks like you have a good start to some fun times. didnt see what pistons you are using. also just out of curiosity, how did you bend valves on a non interference motor?

I was wondering the exact same thing.

Lookin' good so far. Keep it coming!

Thanks for sharing pics of the return bung.
I've seen Jess' before and a few others and am STILL scared to do it. BUT, I might just give er hell soon as I buy a return line + fittings here.

Looks good man, that's a clean block.

if the exhaust system isnt long enough...

(via- i wanna be cool and chop off my exhaust after the cat so its really loud)

...it will not retain enough heat, causing the valves to warp/bend.

learned that my 2nd week of school at UTI. and i love it!

yeah, thats almost a good reason on a n/a engine but doesnt apply to a turbo setup.....on a n/a engine it would burn valves.

exhaust is fine...and couldnt find any markings on the pistons to show where the valves hit...when i went to the machine shop they put a vacuum test on the exhaust and intake side and found two valves that werent sealing...im using oem replacement pistons i will have more pictures up this week when the motor gets put together

D94R
08-17-2009, 11:03 AM
valves that weren't sealing? Did they run these tests dirty (as in didn't disassemble the head first and clean everything). You may have just needed new valve seats there. Where did they say the crack was?

reggioisme
08-17-2009, 05:00 PM
the crack was inbetween the valve seats in the first cylinder combustion chamber

Damn. Very very nice. I like the color scheme. Where'd you get valve cover? Also, not usings timing cover? Using an E-Fan? Did you use a gasket on your oil pickup?

reggioisme
08-20-2009, 10:39 AM
the valve cover is off of the 92 mustang motor, looks better without the timing cover, but timing is still good, electric fan yes just because i can, and yes there is a gasket for the oil pickup i just grinded off the tab that mounts onto one of the main caps because i now have arp studs so there was no way to put it on

reggioisme
08-21-2009, 01:46 AM
the motor is now ready to drop in just have to get a new harmonic balancer, put the belt on, oil drain and oil filter

reggioisme
08-21-2009, 02:16 AM
custom intake was 10 for aluminum and 60 bucks for someone to weld it and the intercooler is a 31x12x3 front mount with 3 inch intercooler piping

WOOOW Thats soooo yummy.

Nice size turbo, looks to be bigger then mine.

I like the studs you used for the lower intake.

Love the valve cover. Pretty sure I mentioned that before.

Intake is pretty neat. 65mm TB?

Should be pretty gnarly going off the stats in your signature.

nagelandy55
09-14-2009, 06:48 PM
Wow very clean engine. Doer once and doer right!

Did you just pick that turbo up cheap or did you actually size it to the engine? You might be trying to push too much air into your motor in the lower RPM's with that one ..... maybe someone else will chime in on it.

speedaddict
09-14-2009, 10:46 PM
That is an awesome build, You did a great job. Wish i could do an upper intake like that.

reggioisme
09-14-2009, 11:02 PM
i got the turbo for $200 its going to spool pretty low too, hopefully it will be a fun ride

nagelandy55
09-15-2009, 07:55 AM
Yes i realize it will spool up fast but i have a feeling you might get some compressor surge in the lower rpm's with that .70A/R cold side. Or maybe not.

speedaddict
09-15-2009, 03:06 PM
I'm running a garrett .60A/R cold side, and .48A/R hot side. I realize it'll spool fast yeah, but if i was gonna go bigger i would leave my cold side where its at and go for a bigger hot side.

reggioisme
09-26-2009, 07:39 PM

reggioisme
11-07-2009, 07:11 PM
so i got the exhaust done today, put the coolant in, put power steering fluid in, put gas in, the last thing to do is put the tune on the computer...the tune doesnt want to go onto the computer so i wont be able to run it this weekend or this fall at all which really sucks because its been down for 7-8 months now

Why cant you run it this fall? And what you mean tune wont go onto your computer? what tuning system you running?

jfive
11-08-2009, 02:58 PM
curious is the little plastic jug for water methanol injection or something. and if you don't know about devils own has a kit for the super coupe tbird that would work perfect for you. cost is 375.00 for the stage 2 kit. so you must live up north to be done for the year. know the feeling im in montana and truck loves to spin the tires when i don't want it to here. one time i had to drive it in the snow and at a stop light the tires started to spin at an idle and almost put me in the ditch.

speedaddict
11-08-2009, 04:53 PM
That plastic jug is for radiator overflow.

reggioisme
11-08-2009, 05:03 PM
the plastic container is for radiator overflow...i am tuning with the sct x-cal 3 from jesse i can use the tuner until it says turn key on dont start engine so there is something wrong with the communication between my ecu and the tuner i really hope that i can get this figured out

reggioisme
11-08-2009, 06:19 PM
alright tonight was very good news my stupid self when i put the motor in let the bolt on the ecu harness that goes into the cab not tight and i remember when i put it in that i was going to do it later so i tightened it up and plugged in the tuner and it starts working, but i started to have fuel coming out in the engine so i have to fix that tomorrow and im starting it tomorrow FINALLLY!!!!:peelout:

reggioisme
11-08-2009, 09:11 PM
im for sure going to take a video of the first start up because i built the motor when i was 17 and i just turned 18 so its kinda cool saying that i built the motor...i port and polished the head myself and if you look through the tread there are pictures of the head surfaced and all that jazz

Question for ya or anyone who reads this..

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i88/reggioisme/DSC00282.jpg

I want to know how you went about cutting down the coil tower at the top. Your's looks so clean like you bought it that way. Obviously it has to be done since I'm mocking it up and the tower is hitting the front of the turbo. Does not having the top bolt effect anything?

reggioisme
11-26-2009, 06:14 PM
i used a band saw to cut the mounts off then grinded it smooth to my liking, but i cut it to the angle of the lines already there and its still really tight to the block with only two bolts and i kinda figured that the serpt. belt would hold it with the amount of pressure the tensioner puts on it

fordnut71
11-26-2009, 06:30 PM
i used a sawall an die grinder to blend it in.

Riddle_Rob
11-26-2009, 07:27 PM
I have a hacksaw and grinder with cutting discs lol. I think I'm going to cut it along that line you mention BUT leave the top bolt hole. I think it will work out for me :) find out later tonight !!

speedaddict
11-26-2009, 11:09 PM
I cut the top of the tower off and welded it to the power steering bracket where the a/c comp went. Look's really good right there and is out of the way.

And yeah i cut the top hole out too. 2 bolts is plenty

reggioisme
11-27-2009, 11:20 PM
or you could cut it leave the hole if you really want it then mount your coil packs on the firewall

jfive
11-27-2009, 11:37 PM
saw this one done and it looked really good. Had the coil packs mounted at the back of the valve cover on the firewall.

i put a little more money into the truck and put an actual air intake temp sensor in and relocated the maf/air filter now i finally am able to use the whole rpm range and it runs pretty good just a few more adjustments on the tune and it will be running a lot better...i probably shoot a video in the new couple days

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i88/reggioisme/headerwrap3.jpg
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i88/reggioisme/headerwrap2.jpg

I'm going to also wrap my wastegate dump tube and the downpipe down to where it meets the wastegate dump...later on i would like to find a cheap turbo blanket...in a little bit ill be getting an electric fan finally...i also plan on flipping the rear shackles which equals a two inch drop then reducing wheel hop with the clamp idea on the leaf springs

ran into something interesting which i need some help on is that i have coolant coming out from the headgasket i have the felpro 1035 headgasket so i dont see that being bad so i think that the head studs got stretched out just enough so im going to go back and retorque them hopefully that fixes my problem

last thing is that i need some more help on find some cheap mods that i can do over the winter to get just a little bit more power out of it

Riddle_Rob
01-03-2010, 10:21 AM
I was debating doing a wrap as well.

I figured though that I would ceramic coat mine. Can get it done locally for $120. We'll see what happens.

Looks good though. Every little bit helps.

fordnut71
01-03-2010, 02:50 PM
coating would be better then the wraping. the header is already thin enough an its going to retain a lot of heat in the bends causing a blow out an cracks.

this has to be one of my favorite builds.
i LOVE all the pictures. glad you put alot of them!
reminds me of my own build.
one question though.
did the compressor housing of your turbo hit your header when installed?
i run a .50trim turbo and i had to space the turbo up one inch in order
to make it fit.
the trucks looks amazing and really looking forward to more info on your build
and dont forget the pics too

That braided line looks like the oil return.

reggioisme
01-23-2010, 07:40 PM
the braided line is the oil drain because the way that its on it touchs the header and i dont want to burn a hole in it so i heat wrapped it

i added the spacer because i couldnt get the banjo fittings on the wastegate due to the compressor houseing

Edit:
Answered my own question.

I used your idea with the custom upper but, I used the ranger lower so my upper is really long and I didn't take extra steps to see if it cleared everything and now it's hitting the wiper motor. SOOO time to hack up my nice new custom upper to fix it... gah.

riddle lets see some pictures of your upper what year manifold did you use?

I used the one from my donor engine which was a 97.
Looks like you used the one from turbocoupe etc.

It was my own damn fault, I told the fabricator to finish it with the measures he had instead of test fitting. I think I have an easy fix though. Just hope it doesn't cost me too much more.

I took some quick snappies.

They don't show it toooo well but, you get the idea.
I have a feeling I'm going to have some major surgery done to make this thing work or remove the wiper motor completely and rainx the window.

Yes, it's 100% my fault for not test fitting it like the fabricator (Joe) asked to do so now I've just gotta deal with it.

Did you port the lower at the cylinder head, if so do you have any pictures. I have three sets of these intakes so I have some extras to mess around with.

So what did you do about the vacuum off the intake. I have been wondering about that myself. The part goes to the fuel rail, and the egr valve, and i think the heater or something on that other side, and the brake booster. Also have you taken it around the block yet. We have had a few days of nice weather that have tempted me to take out my other truck just to remember what hp feels like. I am having withdrawls, and i feel like I am so far away from my truck being done. I do enjoy this build, and the way you did this thread. Also how many pounds are you gonna run total. Can't wait for spring to see a driving video.

reggioisme
02-16-2010, 11:20 AM
all my vacuum is off of a 5/8 hose into a vaccum distribution block on the fuse box and a line to the vacuum booster...i have no egr valve either so it kinda made it a little bit more cleaner...i am currenting driving the truck because my other car is down...it currenting is at 18psi burns them in 1,2 whenever i want 3 and 4th when its wet

I was really afraid of this happening to you, with those pistons. This shows you can't use cast or hyper pistons. I really feel for you though. I think you should be able to build it again, if you can find an engine and a set of forged pistons. Sorry to hear, and don't give up.

jfive
03-07-2010, 09:56 PM
In all reality, you can reuse alot of your stuff. Hopefully the head is untouch, or at least enough that it can be reused. Did you upgrade your rod bolts. I think it just a bit of detonation, on those piston, and a combination of the boost on the pistons. I put a rod through my original ranger engine, and the oil pan. Had two holes in the block, and one in the oil pan that you could stick you hand though. I ended up driving it 4 more miles until it really lost power and decided to trailer it the other 4 miles I had to go. I wish I had pulled the head to see if it was still good, cause my buddy took it in for scrap. Hope you can get another engine and build it up even better. I really like how clean you did everything.

i think you have bent valves in the head also. looks like valve marks on the top of that piston your holding. dont look like the walls or crank has any scoring , so you might be able to do a rebuild.

DangerRanger01
03-14-2010, 12:40 AM
Gross...i'm so sorry. What pistons did you end up using?? What do you think caused this?

reggioisme
03-14-2010, 12:43 AM
hypereutectic pistons with factory forged pistons i think it happened because of a lean condition

jfive
03-14-2010, 01:46 AM
I think he said he has a hole in the block too, so no rebuild, but blocks are cheap. I would just look for a rebuilder, and do it with forged pistons, and arp wav locs, and reuse everything else that you can. hope you can afford it. I know it must be frustrating to have this happen.

Skyy_4life
12-28-2010, 06:44 PM
id go with the 8.8 and drop at the same time, lower the rear 3" with the exploder 8.8 with rear discs, thats what i did.

and i also found one that had the stock lateral bars.
some simple modifications and the lat bars go from the rear end to the frame for extra support.

reggioisme
12-29-2010, 12:47 AM
well its a no go on the tonneau cover, but i have the money to spend so i talked to a guy about an 8.8 out of a mountaineer with 80-90,000 with 3.73ls disc brakes for 200 bucks only thing is that i cant fit the discs over 14s

Skyy_4life
12-29-2010, 05:48 PM
so save the rear end, purchase all new brake stuff for it, and let it sit around until you can get like 18's or something, 18's look good after a truck is lowered.

fordnut71

What's it look like on the caliper for the e-brake cable attachment? If it is anything like a SN95 mustang rear disc set-up, you can use your factory Ranger cables and two short pieces of pipe to make it work.

I had to use two passenger side parking brake cables on my 98 8.8 because the factory driver side explorer cable was too short and rubbed my wheel. A seat spring from my 94 bench seat was strong enough to keep it off the wheel when not engaged, but that was a temporary fix at best. So now I have two passenger side cables and it is a bit soft, but works great with no clearance issues.

Hands down this cover (http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=5&products_id=180) is the best 8.8 cover. I'll never use anything else. I used it on my 8.8 swapped Cherokee and it took some good beating.

It's overkill for a street truck, but what the hell.

d94r that cover to me fits more means for an off road truck that takes a beating against the cover itself where the trick flow looks more street/strip/badass factor

I was going to recomend the ruff stuff one also.

Think of it this way, you had the aluminum oil pan. what happened to it when the engine blew up? Those mag covers look pretty but it's the same deal.

I have a metal cover on my truck, and I built one for a buddy of mine. He blew up a locker and a cross pin. Not one drop of oil hit the ground when it went pop.

If you plan to race the truck, the guys on the track will thank you lots if you can keep the oil in the truck.

Sell the Mag cover and get your money back and go with the ruff Stuff cover. I've seen one up close and they are BEEF!

Much rather have a steel one over the Aluminum anyday.

install turbo
replace heater core line
dynomax ultra flow muffler

this is the high school auto shop that im working out of its the auto body side (the other side is the auto tech) that got shut down so there are 5 lifts on that side that arent being used and im the only one that works on that side...its nice to have the lift and a big ass air compressor and a media blaster at hand...its hard to get in to get some real progress done because i can only go when they are in school and i have the time off of work and when your using paint that takes about 5-8 hours to dry to put another coat on it takes up some time...if i was able to go to work then go work on the truck it would be done already

05-01-2011, 11:33 AM
When the beams go in I'm going to flip my shackles and see where that sits but I'm not going to be running blocks in the rear at all...the coils ill probably end up test fitting because it seems like they are going to settle down a lot once there is weight on them which would be great because I don't think that ill be liking the cut coils to much...if I keep the drop coils ill sell my cut coils for cheap
