Ben 30 years old I live in upstate South Carolina.2001 Ranger standard cab step side.It has 2.5L automatic with a 3/3 drop.It doesn't look lowered.I had to measure it just to prove it to myself.LOL The tires have been replaced since this picture.Running 215-70-15.Factory size was 225-70-15.

Hey everyone, Im Jim, Over in mass. i have a 1999 5 speed 2.5. I put an explorer rear end with 4.10's in the back, disc brakes all around. 4" lift springs I bought bring the truck back up around stock height, i think it may have raised it an inch or 2. rides real nice though. some cheapo american racing wheels on it too. im currently collecting pieces to run a turbo on the stock block, daily driver between 5-10 psi. and if all goes well maybe the motor will get a rebuild with rods and pistons and i'll push more boost. im extremely happy with the site created here and looking forward to learning a lot! Great job jess!

Cool and yea.You probably did get an inch or 2 lift.If I am correct the explorer swap is only a 2 inch drop.I'm planning the swap later on.

My favorite body style, its a 2000, 2.5 auto shortbed with 58k miles. I've done a little exterior mods, small sound system, and recently done a detroit locking diff. Im planning on lifting it 6in w/ 33s later on. The only thing keeping me from turboing it is this 4r44e auto tranny. wondering if it'll be ok with a shift kit and a small amount of boost 7-8psi...

hey ben, nice to meet you, and everyone else here! when i did my explorer axle, i used explorer leaf springs as well because i had heard that i could maintain stock ride height that way. well i did it and i was about at the bumpstops! it dropped a good 4-5 inches. in retrospec it made sense before it went from spring over axle, to spring under axle. I bought the stiffer 4 inch lift springs and gained back my stock height plus an inch or two. i did measurements before and after

Yea I was making the lift reference with the 4 inch lift springs in mind.Since you've used both stock ranger and explorer springs. Are the explorer springs longer than the ranger springs?Just curious. It's been brought up on RPS in the past.

the ranger and explorer leaf springs are the same size. direct bolt in with no problems. now wen i installed the lift springs, they were very stiff. to get them in i had to loosen the shackle and just move it a little to line up and get the bolt through. but thats just because it was stiff. so no problem with size. also, with the explorer axle you can use explorer shock mounts to keep stock location of your shocks

Hey guys, My name is Todd from Jersey. I have been a lurker on here for a while. I have a '93 ranger 2.3(under construction again). I almost have all my parts. I am using an '88 merkur engine, T3-60/63, LA3, and NPR intercooler. I currently have a 5-speed,3.45 open in the truck. I also have a 3.73 open and a trac-lok sitting in a box. I am hoping to have the engine in and running by April. You guys are helping me stay poor...LOL!! We need to have a turbo ranger meet, it would be nice to meet everyone. I'm hoping my truck will look like yours when it had the stepside bed.I wanna do 20's with a sfbd.I think I'll have to rework the rear fenders.
twiztid1
12-25-2007, 01:25 AM
Yeah, I am pretty sure you will have to raise the rear fenders w/ 20's. I am running 225/40-18's on 18x7-+42 offset. I beleive the smallest tire for 20's is 3" taller in diameter than the 225/40-18. With my setup I removed the plastic splash guard, and could fully deflate the bags and not rub. When I switched to the styleside bed, I have to have 10 lbs so it doesn't rub the wheel tub.

Think I could do that now? Nope. HAHA. Trying to learn meself about turbos how they work what's needed to run them. Was really wanting to do just the swap from a turbocoupe etc etc but a donor car is out of the question around here...

Yah, when I show people the turbo and tell them I plan to put it on they are usually dumb founded then I have to go into a 15 minute segway about how turbo's function, turbo basic principals, turbo sizing etc etc.
Atleast here (anywhere 2.3T) everyone 'gets it'.... atleast I hope haha.

hi every 1 my name is mark an im 36. im just north of toronto i got a 97 ranger with a 2.3 na so far iv done some lil things to it. best time at the track so far has been a 16.58et with a 2.60-60ft time at 81mph. iv been building up stock for a turbo swap so i should soon be ready to get it over with .http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=15469&l=0f855&id=696115658
the 1st 10 pics are of my truck ,sorry i dont have any to upload as my computer crashed just before xmas an i lot everything on the hard drive.
tks mark
That is not a bad time at all for a N/A 2.3. My best for my tired 2.3 when it was N/A was a 19.XX. Open diff didn't help at all though, spun through 3rd with it :(
Hi, my name is Liam, I'm from Calgary, Canada. I have a 94 ranger 2wd(daily driver) with an 88 tc engine. Mods are: large npr fmic, t3/t4, 3 inch exhaust, rotated/gutted upper, ported lower intake, ported e6, hurst short shifter, running 15-20 pounds of boost

Hi Guys,
My name is Steve and I live in Akron, Ohio and I'm an alcoholic...sorry wrong forum, I'm 30 something.
I have a 1993 Ranger and I am currently building a 2.3 out of a 1988 Turbo Bird. I've had a lot of different vehicles over the past 20 yrs -from a 1971 Mercury Comet GT to a few different Shelby Turbos. I kind of sell car parts for a living, so this stopped being a hobby way back in high school.
I look forward to seeing what I can do on a budget and I love the help that everyone gives.

Maybe some should know me, I am usually seen cruisin through Therangerstation.com, RPS, and Rangerforums. Ive got the same username for all 4, those and this one. I've really got my mind set on getting my truck to scream from a turbo. As of now, i've been getting alot of help around the site. Its awesome that theres a site dedicated to turboing these 4 bangers haha. Im stunned that my engine is capable of producing 350+hp haha.

I suppose its time for me to say hi. I've been turbo'd for almost 3 years now. My initial setup was a 2.3T, T5, & LA3 swap from a 88 TC. I ran the stock IHI for one summer and got bored quickly. That following winter I pulled everything back out, went over everything inside and out then swapped out the IHI for a T3. The T3 was fun for a little while, but got bored again. This winter I've diched the T3 and now running a HE351. Unfortunatley I'm running out of time so MS, big valves/head port, and larger injectors are gonna have to wait till next winter.
If you have any questions, do ask (more than happy to help), but please search first! Don't feed any lines of BS or I'll jump on ya, spent too many years of searching bunk threads with people making false statements...... I think thats the reason newbies don't like searching in the first place

What's going on guys/gals, I'm Sean from New Jersey, I work an apprentice ship at a small hotrod located in Farmingdale New Jersey. I have at this point in time, a motor and trans, complete with the entire ecu system out of an 85' tc (hey it's a start haha). This will be my first turbo build, and I decided to go with a truck to put some boys and their hondas to shame. You guys are very well going to be my savior as for the members of my shop are an old school group and know very to little about electronics and turbos. I look foward to this build and I'm in the process of getting started. -Sean

And get about the same hp 275 out of it and run MS for fuel&spark. Is their a 5 speed or and aod that bolts to the 2.3L that will take this kind of hp and pull around my mustang to the track? Yeah I just read that in the how to build a 95&up 2.3/2.5. Could I build the stock 2.3L auto trans to handle it though? Just asking because what ever is cheaper and comes my way I'm taking. Plus my truck already has the 5.0 and a c4 and they are bouth coming out for the 2.3. I just do not want to swap to a 5 speed because everyone says it's a PITA<---I don't think it would be as hard as they say would it?

Good morning folks, I guess I'll be your odd guy out here.
Currently residing in the central most part of Texas and like playing in the dirt, I have a 1992 Navajo, I'm the 2nd owner and it's now being powered by a 1987 T-Bird drivetrain automatic style, this is a never ending project and is still sitting the the garage under going lots of work.
I have been playing with SVO's since 1988, untill about 6 years ago I shifted from asphault to dirt, where I belive I have found my calling.
Nice web site!!
I'd post pics of my junk but I need to see about making a few most posts before the forums will let me, so I guess stay tuned :turbob:

Pardon me, is this the place that's giving away free Holsets? No?
Well anyway, I reckon the first thing should be a big thanks to Jesse (& others?) for hosting a place where we can get together.
Well done guys. You should post credits in the FAQ or in a sticky.
Mine is a '93 with a 60-trim and an E6 bolted to the side (Not a swap).
Completed the addition over three weekends and it's running fine, just drove it halfway across the continent and back.
The goal was more cruise power; It just couldn't keep up at 8,000 feet and facing a 20-mph headwind.
I could care less what it does in the 1/4,
I just want to avoid being flattened by a schoolbus full of nuns.

Which one should I be hoping for when I find it, the 2.3 or the 2.5?

A stock 2.3L should be ok with 12-15PSI of boost. The 2.5L a lil less. With race gas 20PSI on the stock pistons maybe :)
The 2.3L motor 95-97 ranger. Or a 98-00 2.5L you can drop in a 2.3L ranger crank a set of good used turbo coupe or SVO rod's and pistons. If you keep the 2.5L you will need to go with crower rods and wiesco pistons.
The 95-97 ranger motor with stock turbo rods and pistons will hold well over 400RWHP. Tune with a SCT tuner. You can get a low 12sec truck for a pretty low cost.
Once these motors are boosted they make a LOT of TQ at 3000-3500RPM's with the right turbo, a holset HX35 works good.

Edit:8:09 AM: Oh I've been looking around and so far I've put together that the 95-97 have obd2 and thats what makes them diffrent, right or no?

Yea -94 OBD1, 95+ OBD2. The OBD1 will need to be tuned with a SCT chip and go with a blow threw MAF setup. I have heard of guys running 15PSI on the stock 93-94 2.3L motors. The 2.3L has a better piston than the 2.5L.

well Ive been around here for a while and finally got around to an introduction.
hello my name is Adam J Fritz, i am 36 years old and i am an addict. i don't drink, i don't do drugs, i am a die hard ford nut and i have been known to stare blankly for hours thinking about turbos.
i am a welder fabricator, turbo header builder, father of one and wife to another... little marriage humor lol.
i own 2 turbo vehicle's.
the first is a 90 bronco II that has been an on going project. its on its 3rd header, 2nd engine (nothing wrong with the first. was pulled and given back to my brother.) and 3rd set of tires :peelout:
it was originally a 2.9 that the previous owner grenaded. i converted it to 2.3T. its a daily driver Ive owned since 2002.
the second is an 86 mustang 2.3 LX that i built just for fun. i rescued it from the crusher. at a total of $800 in the build it made 266hp/305TQ to the wheels running out of fuel at 4200 rpm. its on its second revision of a paired header.
Ive known Jess almost since his beginning at RPS. we arranged a meet pretty soon after he had a running truck and its been down hill ever since :yikes: . hes a great guy to just hang out with. never had a bad time around him. he even gave me the privilege of sitting in the passenger seat when the truck spit an axle out... heheh yeah good times! when he asked me to help out with the forums answering question i jumped at the chance just to help him out. hes a good dude, honest, straight forward, and good hearted.
i don't usually jump in unless its a good question so you may not see to much of me, but i do check in almost every day. good luck on your builds fellas and if you need help don't be afraid to ask. if you ask a dumb question you might get a stupid answer but it will 9 times out of 10 be the right one.

Hello all, my name is Tim up here in Wisco. Picked up my second Ranger earlier this year a 97 XLT 2.3 5spd. My 3000GT broke (suprise suprise right) so I needed to get to work the following monday and I found the Ranger, couldn't have worked out better. This is my second ranger, I also had a 92 STX 4x4 with the 4.0 and a 5spd back in high school, roughly 10 years ago. I have been addicted to turbos ever since my gvr4 and didn't learn my lesson the first time with mitsubishis so I bought another one, my current 3000GT VR4. As expected it likes to break on me so the current Ranger is a welcome addition. But of course I can't keep it stock so I threw in a K&N fliter and found some 17s off a Mustang locally on craigslist and threw those on there too, well except for the front lug covers. I want to get rid of the current Mitsu once I get the clutch in and then concentrate on throwing a turbo on the Ranger. Looks like this is the place to be for that.

Hello,
My friends call me Dyno Brian. I am picking up a 2006 Ranger in a couple days with the 2.3 and a 5 speed. I will be using the truck to pull my mobile motorcycle dyno. I am thinking I need to go turbo charged. I currently I have 88 Mustang GT with Incon Systems Twin Turbo Kit and a 86 GT with a On3Performance Single Turbo Kit. Just trying to get some ideas on how to make about 200 RWHP.
I have the tuning side of things taken care of. :) Your suggestions and guidance is appreciated.

hey guys. let me start by saying thanks right up front. i haven't posted here before, but i have learned a ton of info from searching the forum. let me tell you about my latest project. i built a motor about 7 years ago. its a turbo coupe motor, bored 30 over, p/p stock head w/ big stainless valves, and FoMo cam and roller rockers. i have an old ATR stainless header that obviously won't work in a ranger but i'm gonna modify it so that it will and still be able to keep the A/C. using a 3" downpipe with a big ext wastegate through a 3" high flow cat, and probably stop the exhaust there. using a front mount intercooler, BOV, and a 65mm throttle body, on a gutted intake that i'm rotating 120 degrees. just installed 75# injectors, adj fuel press regulator. i found an 88 T/C trans so that i can have a T-5. i'm using one of the 4 puck clutches that alot of people on here are using. i installed a limited slip with 3.73 gears, and i'm gonna use a set of traction bars. scott at wilson racing is building me a megasquirt as i write this, and i picked up a digital boost controller. my goal is for a daily driver/sleeper that runs good, is fun to drive, but that i don't have to take care of. what i mean by that is, i'm gonna flat black the truck, paint the wheels red w/ some big chrome center caps, and some whitewall tires and make the truck look like a wannabe rat rod. the truck is a 1991 ranger that i picked up for $250. i never finished putting the motor in the first truck it was supposed to go into because of time money, and alot in between. however technology has come along way since then, and i am intrigued all over again. i hope to have it close to done in about 3-4 weeks. again, thanks for the cool site, and all the useful info.

Didn't know where to post so I figured here was as good as any. Been here and checked out the site a few times and thought I would join. I just got my 93 ranger turbo up and running. It is a stock 88 tc 2.3 long block, Bob log, ported knife edged lower, rotated gutted upper, large front mount IC, BOV, 65mm tb and a HE351. I will be installing a Moats Quarter Horse tomorrow, hopefully get some data logging done and work on the tune. After I get that done I will be wiring up the Ford slot style MAF that is mounted in the IC piping in front of the TB. Once I get the tune complete for that I will be installing 69 lb/hr injectors. After the injectors are installed then it will be time to crank up the boost. Going to start in the low 20s. Should have a ported big valve head and a cam in a couple of weeks. Here is a link to some pictures of my old ranger and the current combo during installation.

I'm a Detroit mechanic so I'm checking out what I can do for a boosted inline mill for a small truck, they work so well on the big ones. Don't own a truck right now, last one was a '91 3 liter.

Well, I have been on the site for a few months but never introduced myself. My name is Adam Smith, I am 18, and I live in Bozeman MT. I have an 87 ranger that I was going to turbo and make into a daily driver but the truck is beat to hell and I decided to just part it out and start with something else. That is when I found an 87 mustang with a 2.3l and a t5 with only 69,000 miles, so that is what I will be turboing. My plans are: stock bottom end from a tc, one of jess's centermount headers, T3 from 86 svo, external wastegate, la3, big FMIC,255lph fuel pump, rotated gutted upper, knife edged lower, and around 20 pounds of boost. I have yet to decide how I am going to tune it, I am thinking about getting a quarterhorse. But, college starts in just a few weeks so I probably wont be able to afford to turbo the mustang till next spring.

Hey Everyone.
Name here is Vance. I'm 50 years old and live in Arkansas.
I own a 91 Ranger that I bought brand new. It's been sitting around for about five years. I go out an start it from time to time to make sure the engine stays lubed up. I also keep fuel stabilizer in the tank and add about 4 or 5 gallons of gas every now and then.
My M5R1 transmissin started whining real bad. I'm guessing I let the fluid get to low in it. It has a dent in the drivers door and the paint is coming off. The headliner has had it, but besides that, it's still in pretty good shape.
My wife has been begging me to sell it and I know my neighbors love me. I have actually tried to sell it in a way. Someone will come by and ask me if it's for sale. I always say make me an offer but they never come back. I even tried to give it to one of the kids at the high school. That didn't go over either.
Thats Cool. I didn't want to sell it anyway. I already have the bolts out to drop the transmission and I have a rebuild kit. So I'm going to get the old truck back on the road.
About the time I made my last payment, I was doing general maintenace to the Ranger when I suddenly thought of something. My 2.3L four cylinder has been a stout little performer. I wonder why Ford didn't offer a Turbo version like the SVO Mustang ot Thunderbird.
I did look into it a bit and found it was a bit expensive and a look in the junk yards proved futile as far as the SVO cars were concerned. This was in around 95' or 96'. I'm sure these cars are more plentyful now and the parts must be floating around out there.
Plus it looks like you guys have done most of the research, so I don't have to reinvent the wheel so to speak.
I had a bit of trouble getting past the spam guard to sign up. I thought it was a trick question. There never was a 2000cc Ranger engine. Then I realized it was the year not the size. Duh !
Looking forward to talking with you guys and getting the truck I love rolling again.

My name is Jon and I'm very much a noob here but so far I like what I see. I live in northern va and I've got a 90 2.3 std cab short bed ranger I picked up for $300. The motor took a crap on me the 2nd time I drove it so I figured I'd fix 'er up a bit. I plan on restoring it a bit and attempting to do as much as I can my self. I'd post pics but it isn't much to look at as it is very much a $300 truck. Hopefully I'll be able to get it up and running with you guy's direction

I'm new to turbos, and four cylinders, but not Rangers. I'm actually on my third, looking for my fourth for a 2.3t and I'm not yet 19. I think I have an addiction...
Right now I have an 04 4.0 4wd. Considering the gas mileage I get, I believe the thing is really underpowered. I considered supercharging it, but a 2.3 can be built with more power for less. I'm looking to build a 2.3 that will turn 250+hp and still pull low 20's MPG if I stay out boost, but I would honestly be happy if I could match the power of the 4.0 SOHC and get better MPG doing it (which i know is possible).
I have the basics of boosting a motor, bigger pump, bigger injectors, bigger MAF, forged internals, blah, blah...
Most likely will being doing an OBD-2 setup. 2.3 with TC forged internals, or 2.5 with 2.3 crank and internals (I'm pretty sure you can do that).
The only way I would do OBD-1 would be if I could pick up my grandpa's old truck. Its and 80 something 4 cyl he sold to his neighbor. Apparently it broke down because its been sitting in his yard (welcome to North Georgia where instead of properly disposing of a non-running vehicle you park it in your front yard, preferably on blocks) for a month or 2 now. My grandpa recently passed, so the truck has sentimental value and such. The fact that I love working to cleaning, restoring, and tinkering on vehicles is also a big plus.
I work in my uncle's shop when I can, and I feel comfortable working on newer (probably more complicated) vehicles. Travel back in time a few years and I'm lost. I'm not even sure what a VAM is, and I know it outdates me... My dad worked as a mechanic in the 80's and is pretty handy with older vehicles, so between the 2 of us, I believe we'll make do.

He guys. I'm David, i'm 17 and I have a 96 2.3 standard cab, short bed ranger. This site is awesome. Since I found it all i have done is read, read, and read some more. My goal is to get 280-300 rwhp out of my truck, which I now know is very doable. Ill keep reading as much as I can but ill probably have a lot of questions as I have never turbo'ed anything before. By the way I live by Milford, Michigan. I think its about to start snowing.

TIMMA

I guess this is a good place to start. My name is Tim and I live in CA. I have a white 2002 Ford Ranger XLT Super Cab 2.3L Duratec 5-speed manual with a 4.10 rear. I bought it 3 years ago this month. It gets awesome mileage (26mpg mixed). The only trouble is that it sounds like it has crankwalk / bad main bearings. It was there when I bought it at 89k, but it was so faint, I didn't know what it was. Well it's a little louder now on take-off with 112k miles. I'm planning on just dropping in a lower mile 2.3 duratec and then turboing it. I will probably go the remote mount route, but haven't decided for sure.
My first Ranger I had before this one. It was a white 2000 XL single cab with a 2.5L, 5-speed manual, and 3.73 gears. It got worse mileage than my newer Ranger and felt a little slower (they're both pretty slow). I bought it with 176k on it and sold it with 192k on it. It was a temporary vehicle to get me by while I was working on my Mustang, but I somehow ended up buying another (the 2002).

Hey, Im Jeremy. Im 18 and live in Missouri currently. I,ve got a 1990 Ranger short bed regular cab. I've swapped in a 1988 Turbocoupe 2.3 (and LA3 ECU) with a T3/T4 hybrid turbo added latermaking 20psi(in the process of head studs and 1035 gasket for more boost). Kept the stock M5OD, it's got an Explorer 8.8 with 3.73 opens, Mopar Super Stock 3800lb rear leaf springs, Explorer 4.0L front springs, H.D. sway bars front and rear, proportioning valve, Mopar 15x7 H.D. Police wheels with 235/60r15s up front and 245/60r15s out back. Also got a 16 gal. rear mount fuel cell, external 351W F-150 fuel pump, and a full cage. Think thats about it - oh & I put in the Turbocoupe scoops. Faster than a new Mustang GT, stops and handles like a Ferrari.

I currently drive a mint condition 1996 Ranger, 2.3l 5spd, reg. cab, shortbed.
with a whopping 89,500 original miles. FX4 wheels,06+ tails, sidepipes, K&N drop in, modded intake, stock gears (3.45s with 30" tires suck). its fast enough for me but i want more....
i'm here to get "moar powa". Turbos are kinda new to me.....i'm old school when it comes to building motors but i catch on very quickly to new ideas.
i'll be glad to provide help to anyone who needs it and i'll be asking for some myself.

Hi my names Tim i just recently bought a 88 turbocoupe working out all the bugs on it and i have a 1990 ranger shortbed standard cab 2wd no power steering no a/c crank window and all the base model goodness but that how i like my vehicles no extra crap lol.Thinking about doing a 2.3t swap on the ranger cause its clean but the motors shot guess 350,000 miles will do that and the boostcoupes runs quite well for 107,000 miles but its rusty LOL.
Im Rory, Im 23 and I live in Michigan just outside of Detroit. Currently I drive a 95 3/4 ton chevy with a 454, extended cab 8 foot bed. BUT Im building a 93 ranger reg cab short bed it has a ton of miles but everything is still solid has some rust but not bad. I am a little more than half way done swapping a 2.3 turbo from an 88 TC LA3, T5. The motor and trans are both in now im just tying up the odds and ends I have a 8.8 for the truck also but will be swapping it in at a later date. Hey guys, I'm Mike. Was going to sell the Ranger and drive the SVO daily... but that died too, so... Going to replace the oil pump and pickup soon on the truck and hope there's no damage to the 2.5L but I'll be looking into dropping an '86 SVO motor/trans that I've been piecing together into the truck asap, hence I signed up here. I'd post a pic of the truck, but I don't have anything current since my brother swapped beds with me (he has a 2002) to keep my camper shell. So I'll eventually post a pic with the stepside bed on my truck.

Exhaust pipe roll cage???
Yes.Def not safe. That tube will split in a roll over and impale anyone inside. It's already happen to a friend of mine that had a jeep CJ7 with a steel hard top.
:badidea:
RIP David Colman Jr. :Angel_ani
He had everyone convinced he had a real cage, even me.He spent the money saved on fancy red roll bar pads with vinyl covers. He was a professional welder by trade, so he had the skill and knowledge to build it right. He was just cheap.
Please don't let it happen to you.I know you have family, that loves and needs you.

all you need is a 4 point to go up to 11.49 in the 1/4 mile. Thats just a bar behind the seat, and two going through where the glass would be. Just get lexan to replace back window, and drill holes for the cage. What you got going on is for 4X4s. Also needs to be welded with mig or tig only. I figure I will be fast enough to need one. Jegs sells the kit for a little over a hundred bucks. DOM tubing, or chromoly is all that is allowed.
I assumed it was for mock up purposes. Hopefully that's the case.

Firstly, its not a real cage, i know that, it is more for fit up. However, my truck still has the full roof structure which by itself is enough to withstand most roll overs. The reason its in there is so id have some place to mount the 5 points. It is MIG welded, and I am in school as a welder now. I have the correct tubing to build a real cage, this was more to get a hang of building them and fitting the tubes. I also need to get a bender that doesnt collapse the center of the bend. Im not going to cut holes in the back glass either. On my other ranger, I just ran the rear bars out the back of the cab above the glass, then welded around them. it had to be able to run down in the tens and it passed. I did it after this one, and i dont have the good bender, had to borrow one from a friend. My other is just a drag only truck with no real structure to the body for lightening purposes.
I figured it was mockup, but you realize that pipe isn't going to hold you or the 5 point harness, right?

fit looks real good just need the right tube and bender. Heres the one I have http://www.trick-tools.com/model_3_bender.htm
works nice. Y ou can do it with a torch too, if you fill the dom tube with DRY sand and weld both ends closed. Sand must be 100% dry, when water turns to steam it expands 1200 times. Will disform tube or go boom. both bad.

A buddy of mine just bought a bender for making roll cages. I need to see if its cheaper to buy the dom and have him bend it, or just order the kit through jegs. I plan on doing mine when I change out my seat.

Hey guys, I have been looking at building a turbo Ranger for a while (I'm also on RPS and TRS, but I don't post much because my '04 4.0L 4x4 is mostly stock). I just sold my motorcycle and an already built turbo Ranger came up for sale in the same price range, I still have to go look at it but from the description I'm 90% sure I'm going to buy it.
The truck I might buy:
1990 Ranger 2WD 5-speed. 2.3T, T5, and computer out of '88 Turbocoupe. Torn down to bare block, honed, and rebuilt with all new rings, bearings, gaskets, timig belt, tensioner, plugs, and pilot bearing. Ported E6 manifold and electric manifold installed. Needs gauges and exhaust (included with sale, just need installed). Good body, paint, and interior. $2,000.
I come from a long line of V8 guys, so romping all over them with a turbo 4-banger is just so appealing. So far the line I am most excited to use is "I bet my 4-cylinder Ranger can beat that!" I can't to see all their faces go

its even more effective if you dont use a line and just catch them off guard and all they can say is WTF!!!

Haha, yeah but either way they still have some nice cars! Let me see if I can remember some of what they have:
'58 Corvette- 283/4-speed
'67 Corvette- 427/4-speed, custom 4-link
'68 GTX- 440/727
'55 Bel Air- 454/Powerglide
'67 Camaro 327/4-speed (my grandmother's car, she can shift faster than me:()
'67 GTO- 400/4-speed (still a work in progress)
I have been after an SVO Mustang for a while, but this Ranger fell right into my lap. Ever since I saw the video of Huber running the 8.92 I have been sold on getting one of these engines, and then I got a Ranger as my daily so it makes it even more fun to have a good 4x4 Ranger and a fast 2WD Ranger!

Hello all,
I just wanted to take a few mins to introduce myself, my name is Ryan as it says… I live in the Detroit area. I have a 1994 standard cab, short box Ranger w/ a 2.3L. The head gasket blew and I think warped the head. I haven’t had it tested though. Anyways, it is currently sporting a 93 2.3L. I have been wondering around this site and I LOVE what I see! The majority here seems to know their stuff and is very tolerant of new comers. I have been reading a lot and using the search function but still have a few basic questions before I get started. I need reassurance that my 94 2.3L block will be a suitable platform for this project (since it is sitting in my garage doing nothing…). Is there any preference between the 93 and the 94? I would also like to find any literature on turbo charging in general (maybe like a “turbo charging for dummies”). I have learned the basics, but a lot is still unclear. I am looking for something in the intermediate to advanced category. Any direction you guys can steer me in would be great. Thanks. Oh, I am looking for around 400 whp.
Thanks again,
-Ryan

Hey guys,
New guy here. My name is Pat, I'm from Ontario, Canada. I just got my 94 Ranger on the road. It's a 2.3 5 speed. I bought it with the intention of putting a turbo on it (I turbo'd my last 4 cars as well).
Thinking stock TC turbo/manifold, 5-8 psi boost (or whatever is reasonable on NA pistons), Megasquirt, Ford 24# injectors.
Great forum, lots of good info.

Sounds good, but I would go with Micro Squirt for ignition control.I dunno if that is available with Mega Squirt.I haven't played with Mega Squirt in years and it was no where as advanced as it is now.I dunno the regs in CA, but if you can go with an older set up,I'd just drop in a late 80's T-Bird TC set up.
Pimp_Daddy_Patty
07-18-2010, 11:11 PM
I've been running Megasquirt in all my turbo cars for years now, no need for microsquirt as it is less modifable than the regular MS1 or MS2. Plus, I have 2 MS units sitting right next to my computer LOL.
Ontario regulations prefer same year or newer engine swaps. No body actually looks and as long as emissions pass, it's not a problem. If I can find a TC motor for a reasonable price, it would likely be cheaper and easier to do, but I don't have my heart set on making this thing too fast. Just enough power to battle a few hills and a compact car on a dolly hooked up to the truck a few times a year.

Hi, my name is Adam, 21, found this forum the other day looking for swap candidates for my car. I don't own a Ranger, don't really plan on buying one, unless I find a good 5spd 4cyl with a fair price. I'm a student full time, majoring in Marine Engineering and management, work part time at FedEx, and as a Heavy Equipment mechanic for my God-father's construction company.
Anyway, this is the real reason why I joined. This is my second Rx-7 (Pics below), bought it with a blown motor (Just swapped), wanted to keep my first 7, but someone brought a knife to the convertible top, and ruined it, on top of stealing my s**t. Anyway, I wanted to swap in a 5.0 v8 but turned away from it cuz of the price, and bought 2 motors that were "good" and were internally shot, so I've been pretty discouraged (even though I had some scumbag sellers). My dream has been literally cut in half now... I would love to get a 2.5t in there. I know there are the 2.3t from the svo and t-birds, but I want a 2.5. I came here to learn about the OHC motor and learn about turbo-ing it really.

It would be easier and cheaper to build a turbo rotor motor to go back in there. There will be a but load of fabrication. The last swap I did on an 80-'s model RX was a V6 and the radiator had to be relocated to the front of the core support and the tunnel had to be cut out and made wider and taller. We had to loose the brake booster and mount a race set up under the dash. There was much much more involved.Remember, your car is a unibody and cutting into can weaken it significantly.Be aware that the 2.5 is one of the tallest 4 cylinders around. Not trying to discourage your just want you to know whats involved.BTW,my 2.5 all up is taller than the 351 Windsor in my cougar by almost 6 inches.

Hi guys.
I just bought a 97 super cab ranger. 5 speed with of course a 2.3.
I'm new to the Ford 2.3 world but familiar with 8 valve 4 cylinder turbo engines. I'm currently building a 2.5 turbo for my 86 daytona cs. Once its together I'm going to turbo the ranger, definitely needs some power haha.
I look forward to making a sleeper ranger as i just get a kick out beating people in what should be much faster cars. I once had a v6 f150 that ran mid 13's with the help with some nitrous :) look on people's faces was priceless. Haha

I'm located in south Florida and have been lurking around with one or two occasional posts. I'm an Air Traffic Controller at Miami Center and I haven been planing to get back into the car tinkering thing. Since I also want a pickup for daily driving so the my Infiniti could get a break, I decided to look up the most feasible and affordable truck I could turbo. I plan on buying an Ranger or B2300 95-97 so I could use the SCT tuner. I am just sourcing parts right now and plan on keeping the budget as low as possible to see how low I could do it for (minus the turbo).

I'm not worried about the height of the engine, things can always be adjusted to fit, there are plenty of swaps available for this car, www.grannysspeedshop.com specializes in swaps for all 3 generations of rx7. I'm tired of the rotary, If I could get a equally weighed engine, and produce more power than the rotary without the timebomb, I'll be happy.

Swap the whole engine. It's easier and the 2.3T can handle the turbo.A stock 2.3 Ranger engine can not.

Hey,
I'm in my 40's, I've had several V8 mild performance sedans, 96 impala SS, 02 Lincoln LS, etc.. After the LS V8 expired, a little lighter in the wallet, I find myself back to driving a TBI/4l60E powered '70 C-10 built years ago.
While I have a hotrod and a kustom project stashed away, I lost my mind and was talked into an unconventional build for my next daily driver. Since the LS demise a friend talked me into a 1946 Ford "jailbar" pickup on a 2wd Ranger chassis. He has re-bodied several first generation Rangers and likes the cheap platform. Since I am the consumate V8 hot rodder I was skeptical. The "jailbar" truly has a face only a mother could love but hell I'll try anything at least once. Since starting this adventure I met a local hotrodder doing a 1950 Chev AD truck powered by a warmed over T-bird supercoupe powertrain, pretty wild setup.
Currently the 46 Ford truck has the stock Ranger 2.3 5spd but after reading/researching some easy options on this forum and the ranger station, I'm thinking a mild turbo motor will need to be in the works, especially since the 46 Ford pickup body is a few lbs heavier than the original Ranger body.
Lots to read up on, thanks for the site.

Take your time, we haven't finished the cab mounts yet, it's scheduled to replace my 70 C-10 sometime in spring.
I told our 13 year old son that he and I are going to build a replacement turbo motor for it next summer, he thought it was a great idea... my wife just rolled her eyes and left the room shaking her head.

Well I will fit the "old fart" requirements <grin>. My name is Calvin, 58 years young, retired USN (Data Systems Chief Petty Officer), retired TRW (R&D prototype engineer, on brakes, ABS, suspension control systems, "by wire" intragation development (i.e. brake by wire, steer by wire, electronic roll control, etc.)) living in Clinton, SC. I have too many projects (1990 Mustang GT, triple black ragtop, 5 speed, 1953 Chevy pickup slated for a 2.3 turbo swap from a former scca prepped T-bird with head work by "Fast Flow heads by Lorenzo" in Bensalem, Pa (old friend), 1993 Ranger ext. cab slated for stock 1990 turbo t-bird driveline with 5 speed, prepping a 1993 F-350 turbo diesel and 2000 E-350 for sale and shopping for a 1998 or newer flareside with 4 cyl/ 5 speed for parts chaser. Being retired I have more time than money but everyday is a Saturday, c'mon by and shoot the sh*t sometime, email @ oldcarfart@aol.com. y'all enjoy!:welcome:
and yes, Ron's "car sales" <grin> is a great place to shop, best time to deal is Tues-Thurs 10-4 as he has less BS to deal with than on Monday's and Fridays.

What's up guys. I have been following jess on rangers revenge and a member of rps for 5 years. Just bought rgbigairs's turbo ranger and am going to need some help with troubleshooting. I will post pics and vivid descriptions of what I am dealing with later but for now just wanted to introduce myself. I hope to get to know some of these ohio guys for some help.lol

Hey guys, names chris, 27 and live in southern maryland. Been building stuff for a while now, had 3 camaro z's, 1 gt stang, an rx7 and even a merkur xr4. I'm really looking fwd to building the hell out of my 99 ranger. Haven't felt like this since my mustang.
Just wanted to say thanks for all the advice in the future and this is a great forum

Glad I finally found this section lol, name's Dave, friends at the shop call me Supa Dave, dunno why but they enjoy it lol. 20 years old. Currently live in Louisiana. My first car was a 1993 Mercury Topaz when I turned 16 (Shouldn't even mention that one....lol), Later I bought a Lowered 1975 F-100 and swapped in a Terminator Engine and 6-speed (Got it from a "totaled" 2003 cobra) while I was still in Auto class and working, later totaled it and landed myself in the ICU (Truck was stupid quick and almost killed me for it). Now I own 2 Rangers a 1995 and a 1997, both XLT 2.3 EXT cabs. plan on using the body rotten 95 as a donor car and use it to build me a Turbo Fovlo 2.3 to drop in my 97. God willing and with your guys support and knowledge XD.
