I bought a 92 Ford Ranger with a 3.0 and an m5od really cheap and it needed a transmission. So I went out and purchased an m5od from a 95 ranger I believe it bolted up nicely but in the tailshaft of the transmission there is no hole for the VSS sensor(so obviously my speedometer/odometer doesnt work). So what I did was took the tailshaft off the busted transmission that came with the truck and stuck it on the new transmission. Now there is no gear inside the trans to spin this sensor for the speedo. Is there anyway I can use this trans and the gear from the old trans to get my speedo to work? I dont have much experience inside of transmissions. (ohh and I have already checked the speedo cable/vss sensor/and instrument cluster broke none of them are broke). Thanks

should be able too. I have a 700r4 auto in my 89 gmc and it came with an electric speedo sensor from the factory, but when i built it into a hot rod i took out the computer, and so when i bought my built transmission i had them put the gears for a cable speedo in so i could use an aftermarket speedo in my truck. You see older cameros had the cable speedo in the same transmission so all they did is swith parts. Only difference is they didn't have to switch tail shafts just the guts. hope this helps.

Anyway, I think(dont quote me) that you can swap the speedo gears and put in an earlier instrument cluster with speedo cable. Or, you might be able to pull the drive gear off your new tranny and swap it with the one on your old tranny. I think they just slide off once you have the tail housing off, if not, then it may have a snap ring on the shaft. On another note, has anyone here tried to just pull the tail off a ZF 5speed tranny? Bad idea, all the guts are held together by it:(

in my 94 2.3 when i swapped out the 94 tranny mech. speed sensor for an 01 tranny all i did was kept the 94 tailhousing took the snap ring off the 94 pulled the gear and the magnetic ballbearing that the gear slid onto using a stronger magnet then that holding the ballbearing to the shaft. then simply pulled the housing off the 01 put the ballbearing in the hole on the
shaft slid the gear over that followed by the snapring and the 94 tailhousing and all works great.
