How To Resurface a Flywheel

I need to replace the clutch, and I want a “new” clutch surface on my flywheel so the clutch will operate problem free.

The first step is to have the flywheel cleaned of oil , grease and grime.
This flywheel is in decent shape minimal warp and few hot spots

I found my Ford Dark Blue Spray Paint!!

Next is to mount the flywheel to the machine
Move the flywheel under the grinding stone, and touch off….

Each pass is only .002 -.003 deep per cut

See the sparks?

Now that we have a good surface for the clutch disc to mate too…

One last thing to do is to knock in the pressure plate alignment pins

All done…

holy smokes, how old is that machine? It looks like it's at least 3 machines in one.

yes it is an old machine, built back in 1964, its a Van Norman head surfacer, with the flywheel attachment.

It will mill heads and blocks along with surfacing flywheels

It has 10 carbide teeth, It will not do a good job of milling alum heads... But dose just fine for milling cast iron heads with a composite gasket.
But since I got a new comec auto I 1000 surfacer, I do not use it any long for milling heads, just to surface flywheels.

I actually ran one of these, but it was just for heads. I absolutely hated that machine. Luckily we upgraded to a cbn style machine, because that Van Norman about made me walk off the job more than once.

I think the name and model have worn off of it. It still does great cuts. Your new one definitely has more features.
