I'm wanting to run top mount. How would you recommend Jess?I don't mind cutting and adding a scoop in my hood.I think it'd look cool.

whats the dimisions to a good front mount size for our trucks?

What way would be best to run the intercooler?
Top mount with direct shot thru the cooler to the throttle body.
or
Front mount with the long way around the front end.

Top mount may not have enough time to cool the air before it enters the engine.
or
Front mount gives plenty of time for the cooler to be more effective, but boost pressure and flow drops.

I like the top mount. It's different than everybody else set up.Only a few vehicles come from the factory with them.
Front mount everyone is doing it.It's a little ricey but effective.

Everyones opinion is welcome.

My set up would be off set to the p***enger side over the turbo.I'd cut and seal the hood to the intercooler and add an air scoop.

AAhhhh I see now. I thought thats what you meant. Would the top mount be cool enough? Wouldnt the turbo right underneath it generate a lot of heat?

Sitting in traffic maybe, but moving should be fine.I'm planning to ceramic coat my exhaust housing and using a heat shield around the turbo.

I see, the coating would definately help. that would look awesome with a little scoop right on the hood for the intercooler. also keep it reaaaal cool while driving

There is quite a bit of room for a front mount. I was looking into fitting the biggest intercooler I could stuff in. However it seems to be easier to just pick up one of Jess's when he gets them. By the way I dont have AC so that frees up a ton of room.

try a 31"x12"x3" fmic! it should work out fine i think! this size intercooler is good to support a great amount of horsepower!

Make sure to measure and see what size will fit best. I don't think I can use any thing longer than 28".

The easiest way to get a FMIC in a Ranger seems to be the Large NPR cooler. This comes with a few sacrifices. If you keep the AC then you may need to do some remounting of the AC condensor and/or radiator, possibly cutting the header panel too. I ditched the AC, making the fitment a non issue.

Top mounts will heat soak quicker than a FMIC if its not isolated from engine heat. Which, with the way the 2.3T was setup, the top mount is directly over the turbo/header. Not good.

While yes, the top mount has shorter piping, the FMIC's (NPR in this case) can be setup for super short intercooler piping as well if you run a rotated upper.

Case in point; my ranger with my previous NPR FMIC setup.

what is this NPR intercooler I keep hearing about? Do they have a web site? Whatd you have to cut to fit the cooler into the grille, and to mount the lines through the core support? Im a bit lost on mounting the thing & trying to see how others have done it. thanks for the tips!!

the npr is a isuzu box truck intercooler. they come in a variety of sizes. all are the same width just different heights. they are a nice tube and fin design but the prices have went through the roof on them. you can get a simular sizeed bar and plate IC for about the same price and they are more efficient.

intercoolers come in 2 types. bar and plate and tube and fin. bar and plate are the more efficient of the 2. intercoolers use surface area to cool the intake air charge and bar and plate type have more realestate. you want as much on the inside as on the outside. they also need to flow at a slow enough rate that the heat can be wicked away.

some tube and fin intercoolers are not internally finned. the volvo is one of them. thats why its junk. the NPR is internally finned and thats why its.... well, cool :).
now there are small tube and large tube NPR's. you want the larger of the 2.

nearly all oem intercoolers are tube and fin. the turbo coupe and SVO's are the exception. there are others. OEM intercoolers are usually bar and plate only when tight spaces are a concern and the they need a small compact intercooler.

examples of tube and fin and bar and plate intercoolers

We don't stock any IC's and as of now there are no plans to order any IC's.

It is hard to compete with a company like CXracing when it comes to IC's

Here is the IC I bought and installed in my truck.
