Is a hone necessary when replacing pistons with standard sized turbo pistons? My cylinder walls look incredible and immaculate. Do I need to do I hone? Should I anyway?

Yes if you installing new rings with them. Help the rings seat. Jess is the man to talk to about that.

the ball type is the best to use IMO
A hone is a must IMO.
I second the ball hone. They are expensive, but work the best by far especially when honing by hand. And I have used all 3 types.

Yea a hone is easy to do. Just don't take much out, you want it to where it will seat the rings in. See pic attached. I use auto tranny fluid to lubricate when I hone.
You can see about how much I hone the cyl in the pic.

you can buy a bottle brush hone also. saves you the time of trying to get a good cross hatch.

Honing the cylinder is a good Idea. However, I pulled my pistons with the engine in the truck. At 105000 miles I saw very nice crosshatch and decided not to hone, because the oil pan wasn't coming out of the chassis. That was a year ago and I have had no problems with blowby or oil consumption. I know it is not ideal but it did work well.

I also didn't hone, there was some good cross hatching still visible. Looking back i probably should have, my compression is around 130 pre cylinder which seems kinda low 1 year after a rebuild. But i've had no problems with oil consumption or excessive blow by.

When I put Gary’s motor together I did not hone it still had the hone marks so I let it go.
Not sure where that hone was bought at. Any auto part store should have one.
