I'm not sure how the vlave setup works on the rangers. Is there a way to adjust them? Things that may go wrong with them? I have a good little tick going on thats pretty noticeable at idle, and increases with engine rpm, but seems to just get faded out and not be overbearing as it goes up. It sounds like upper engine, sounds like valves. Any suggestions?? Thanks!
That 'tick' is most likely the injectors pulsing.

Ya the injectors are pretty loud. You should be able to tell if its a metal on metal or if its the injectors if you listen really close.

if its pretty loud id say its a hydrolic lash adjuster. if its sounds like a sewing machine then its the injectors. if you can hear it in the truck lash adjusters or rod bearings. with the hood down, lash adjusters. hood up injectors.

Aaaah so the injecors make a decent little ticking noise with the hood up? Its sort of a deep tick, but the noise is almost gone with the hood closed

my injectors tick, take a screwdriver and put one end on the injector and the other end on your ear and that will tell ya

Hmm, may be hydraulic adjuster lash. I'm pretty sure it is. How hard is it to do and whats involved? I have no ide how to do it

pop the valve cover off
you will need a valve spring compressor that works with overhead cam heads
once you compress the springs the followers come off and the lash adjusters pull right out
you can push on them with your hand after the followers are off, if they are all tight then they are good
its easy to do with the correct tool
check the injectors like i said before first

Unfortunantly the noise isn't coming from the injectors, I checked that tonite. It only ticks at lower rpms, once I get to about 2K the noise is gone, or least appears to be. Are the lash adjusters something that should be done ASAP before too long? Is it a bad job to do, or easy like it sounds?

Quick question. I tried to do some research about hydraulic lifters. Could running too thick of an oil cause a slight ticking at idle speeds? I'm running 20w-50 because I was worried about low oil pressure from before, so I wanted to make sure I was getting good thick oil. I'm going to run 5w-30 after break-in

holy crap thats some thick stuff, i dunno if that would cause the tick tho
I'd advise against using a super thick oil for brake in, and then going to lower weight oil for use. Your engine is going to clearance itself out for the thicker oil, then you put thinner oil in it and you could eventually have oil pressure problems again. Not immediately, but possibly down the road, especially if you beat on it hard.
I'd stick with a 30 weight oil for break in and daily use.
The only way I'd see the thicker oil causing a ticking though would be clogged oil holes for the HLA's, or its super freaking cold where you are and the oil is sludging up.
Also, how'd you conclude that its not the injectors? When you rev the motor, they will get drowned out. But how you described it from the first post, I'm still betting its the injectors. A tick or knock from anything mechanical inside would get louder usually with more rpm.

I tried to place a long piece of metal, like a screwdriver against it and listen and couldn't notice it at all. I'll have to try it again and again though to rule it out 100%. Since it does go away with rpm
If the HLA's aren't pumping up until more RPM, that could also be the case since you hear it at idle but it then goes away. Though, the injectors tick awful loud. And its a specific tick, I don't think I've heard an HLA or follower make that kind of noise before. But I'm not there to tell you what you hear either.
Can you get a sound clip?

Don't mind the BOV, I have to do a little adjusting to it, its makin a loud little screech in the vid, but you can hear the noise at idle, then it will go away with RPMs

sounds like injectors to me
That second video doesn't sound like injectors man. Injectors sound like a pressure valve on a tank when it spits real quick. Its a 'tick', whats in that video sounds more like a clunk.
Last time I heard that clunk though, I spun a rod bearing. Though, it usually would get worse with RPM.
Piston slap maybe? Does it do it when the engine is warm?
I'd pull the valve cover now and see what's going on atleast up top.

It definately goes away with RPM. It seems that temperature doesn't have any effect on it. I will have to take off the cover and take a look it appears. The noise isn't as loud as it seems in the video, I had the camera about next to the injectors/valve cover trying to get a good sound of the noise.
