well because the bottom end locked up on my ranger i was looking for another alternative and im thinking either the 4.6 SOHC the 5.0/302 or the 4.0 going to turbo whatever way you look at it.

302s are not boost friendly, so I would go 351w or 4.6sohc. Find a aluminum 4.6 out of a lincoln mark viii, since they can handle up to 1200hp with a forged crank and rods, and the main bolts are reuseable unlike the 03-04 cobra. Also they are suppose to be good for like 200,000 to 300,000 miles stock.

I'm sorry man but you are VERY far off. The 302 is the same platform the 351 is off of. Kinda like 2.0L, 2.3L, & 2.5L. I'm not a Ford 4 cyl. expert yet, But I have been messing with fords push-rods and mod motors for years. Ford motor just LOVE boost. The issue with the 351 W&C, & 302 are the heads. Ford doesnt have a great set of heads, Stock arent any good, the GT40p are ok but thats it just ok. Now there are Some setups out there that are sick. But most drag radial race cars are running push rod engines for a reason THEY FREAKEN LOVE THOSE SNAILS FEEDING THEM, And they are MUCH cheaper to build. My buddy owns that cammo 94-98 style mustang y'all may have seen in Nopi? He also is running a 302 based Engine.
I on the other hand LOVE modular engines. I own a 97 F150 4x4 with a 5.4L We have owned since new. Its pushing 400k miles and All I have done was the basic services (oil plugs injector flush *I love mystery oil). On over 275k I was on stock timing chains and all. Now recently my father took the truck back to TX. And was changing the oil with only 5 QT's And they take 6.5-7 so over hard driving at his job it delevolped a knock. It is running a 04 5.4L engine with the P.I. heads so runs nice now. So your fact about mileage is ok, But alot of taken care of cars nowadays are getting high mileage. My 06 Altima has 152k already (I love the car, 28mpg city/h.w. mix) It has gone to NJ, NY, Pa, Tx, LA, MS, AL, GA, VA, NC, SC, TN, And all over FL. We get away ALOT.
Sorry for rambling on, and half of it probably dont make sence, since it is 2am here. But I just wanted to put my say in it. The main reason the 302/351 is built more is due to $$$.

Actually I am talking about how the 302 blocks crack if you start making too much horsepower. 500 is allright, but when you exceed this amount, your taking risks. Just google it, and you'll see some real carnage. You could tap the freeze plugs, get a stud girdle, and there are things you can put in the valley of the motor to help, but the amount of extra money it takes to beef up a 302 to make some real horsepower, I would start with a 351w or a boss 302, or A4 block, or dart. The 4.6 motors are differant. They can make up to 1000 hp in most cases with upgraded crank rods and pistons. I am a die hard ford fan, but a 302 is great for a 500hp n/a motor, but I wouldn't try and do over 650. Its just a food for thought thing. http://strokerkits.wordpress.com/2009/10/25/stroker-kits-com-announces-the-industry-exclusive-bbs-system/

There are surpports/braces that fix the crack issue. It happens in most V8 push rods engines when they get to decent power. The 302 and the 351 are good until about 600ish. But this is all on which year of the block. The 351 (9.5 deck) is good for about 700ish and thats about the most you will get safe built until a Dart or upgraded block is next to manditory.
I am building a 99 cobra alum. Teskid engine now I have it posted on this site. They are great and produce big numbers but very expensive. I havent even installed the engine or turbo kit. And I am already looking for a dart 351 with a 9.2 deck block. Going for a 9sec street car. Like the camaro (F-bomb from the fast and furious lol)

On the topic tho. If your wanting to do this swap it looked pretty much drop in they cut the airbox and moved the booster over .5" thats about it. So I would do it if your looking for something different. I would bet the Mod motor would be far faster then a 2.3T swapped ranger. If your feeling frisky and have the $$$ you could do a 03/04 supercharged engine. Or if your on a budget a teskid alum. mark viii or continental engine can be had for a couple hundred bucks. Then just run a harness and ecu from that car. The mark Viii engine came out in 93 and if you swap the intake manifold to a 96-98 type and swap cams with a 96-04 cobra you will have a 300 rwhp car with just simple boltons.

I dont watch it since all the new people. You are sure right thats 10k atleast in parts, To a truck thats is going to be a PITA to hook up, And the IRS has alot of issues so theres alot to dump into that to stop wheel hop, and they are weak. Its nuts and these cars sit in a field when they're done.

It's funny I considered a swapping a built n/a 4.6 into my ranger before I settled on the 2.3 duratec. I just wanted something different, too many 302/351 rangers.
The girdles on a 302 just keep the mess a little neater when it lets go and depending on what block you have with a 351 they can handle over 800 hp reliably.
