View Full Version : Ranger SVO Hood

My Ranger has looked too plain for too long. In late October I started a search for an SVO hood scoop and I finally located one in early December.
What I plan to do is integrate the scoop into the ranger hood. The offset will be a little more than the SVO Mustang hood.
Here is what I have so far
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/wrf01a/RangerScoopIII.jpg
The scoop will be cut down a little more before the hood is cut. I am only at the very beginning stages of this project.
The louvers will be added to the scoop before the scoop is attached to the hood

I picked up a hood at the local wrecking yard Thursday. The actual work (cutting and welding) will start in about three weeks. The hood will be cut out and flanged. The scoop will be fitted and welded in place. The SVO ducting will be attached to the hood after the scoop is in place. This will be a little more complicated than a body panel.
Any suggestions that will make this project easier will be appreciated.

I think it's a great idea. I did something very similar with my Galaxie. 63 T-bird scoop onto a 64 Galaxie
You're plan is right on. Just go slow on the welding, twice as slow as whatever you're planning on doing. It'll save you bodywork and prep time down the road. It's gonna want to warp, so just take your time.

Why the louvers? That'd let air out the back, kinda defeating the purpose of the scoop even being there. Besides, it looks better without them!
I agree, lose the louvers.

I will do that, in fact, I'll make sure it has plenty of time to cool before I come back to a spot.

I have a couple of friends that would agree with both of you. But part of this is about looks, and it ain't a Hot Rod unless it has louvers. Louvers are old school and I'm old (51) so I'm gonna go with the louvers.
But I do sincerely appreciate all responses, really thanks.
Louver the fenders? I love that you are trying to go ol school with it though.

i would'nt put the louvers on the scop, but one on each side of the hood would be cool...i respect the old school stuff

I'd put the louvers behind where the turbo is gonna sit, to evacuate any hot air and keep underhood temps down. So placement would depend on which header you're using.
By the way, where did you get the louvered panel and how much was it?

I got them from rodlouvers.com (http://rodlouvers.com/Default.aspx) and they were around $25 for the pair. I have two louver panels, not sure what to do with the other one yet.

so your not actually going to hook the scoop up to the intercooler?
Ranger SVO
01-06-2011, 06:03 PM
No, it will not be ducted to an intercooler, for two reasons. Reason One, The Ranger hood is shorter than the Mustang hood which places the intercooler ducting too far back on the Ranger hood. Reason Two, my truck doesnt have an intercooler. Bummer.
The ducting will be welded in place when the hood is built. But it can be moved if we need to in the future.
I have no current plans to add an intercooler, but I also had no plans to build a hood, it just happened one day

I took the scoop to the High School that I work at and started on the scoop.

The Ranger hood was puchased locally. The SVO hood was not.
The SVO Hood was shipped to me from NY, so I have no idea about the car.
I meant to get back to you sooner, sorry for the slow response.
More pictures will be coming soon. The louver panel was cut off (the fit was not quite right) then refitted and it will be welded back on later this week. I just realized that this project needs to look perfect and that will require that the work is done right the first time.

We had some really nice weather today and got alot done on the scoop. We did not like the way the louvers fit, so they were cut off, refitted and put back on.
The louvers were clamped on using screws

Then we welded the louver panel to the scoop

We grinded the welds down, put a little primer on it. I will do the body work after its attached to the hood.

We cut the hood, cut the scoop, figured out where everything needs to go and decided to call it a day

There is a lot more work to do, I'll post more as I get more done

The next update will be two or three weeks from now. I've got alot of stuff that needs to get done so the Ranger hood will be on hold temporarily. I'll work on it some more during Spring Break.

I love the svo scoop in the ranger hood. I wasn`t too crazy about the louver deal and I do understand the old school thing but I think it`ll turn out fine. I look forward to seeing the hood complete on the truck though .

At first I wasn't liking the louver idea, but now that it's smoothed in and the scoop is on the hood, I'm liking this project! Can't wait to see it done
This is SWEET! I love the look of it. If it were mine, the only thing I would have done was flip the louvers backwards. Two thumbs up on this project.
Your truck man, do what you want.

Well, I had some things come up and was not able to work on the hood until today. We finished welding the scoop to the hood and started on the body work. So far everything is on target and everything is going smooth.
We decided to attach the hood to the truck and see where we are and what still needs to be done
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/wrf01a/RangerHood5.jpg
Now for the body work, because so much time was spent on fit, body work will be simple and really easy. In fact after grinding down the welds, we saw how little filler would be needed to finish out the scoop.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/wrf01a/RangerHood6.jpg
We went over it with a DA with 80 grit. Shot a little cheap rattle can primer on it to see where we were at. And we LIKED what we saw.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/wrf01a/RangerHood8.jpg
Now to start on the ducting
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/wrf01a/RangerHood7.jpg
Now we still have a long way to go, but we are getting it done

I really enjoy reading the comments and opinions on the louvers. I still have a long way to go so please keep the comments coming, I do sincerely enjoy reading what others think.
The SVO ducting is next. I won't work on it tomorrow. Not sure about next weekend either. But Stay Tuned, it will get done.

You really should have tried it. I had a few people that thought I was nuts. But here it is and its moving right along.
Anyway, I've been really busy and I have not had anytime to work on the hood. So today we got started on it early this morning and got most of the body work done and got a coat of primer on it.

It will be about two weeks before we work on it again, but I'm a teacher and I'm about to have all the time I need.

I think the hood is turning out great. I still think the louver thing would look better on the side of the fenders but it`s not as offensive as I thought it would be on the hood. Nice work non the less .
