im going to swap my 2.0 out of my ranger w/ 5spd in favor of a 2.3T; will my transmission handle the power? what about the clutch?

The 88 Ranger? It should be the Mazda trans, which is what everyone else uses unless they swap in a T5 or it is an auto. It's the one I've been beating on for years now..

so the entire drivetrain should handle the 180-200 hp i want to make with the 2.3T?

Yeah, mine is. I ran a stock clutch up to 15psi, but the stock 2.3 clutch started to slip, so I got the 2.3 Heavy duty disk, which was the same as the V6 disk. It lasted to about 18psi. If you want to save yourself some hassles, just go ahead and get a performance clutch, and put it in from the beginning. The disk I'm running now is a solid hub 6-puck, and it works great, haven't slipped it yet at 20-22psi, but it has a tendency to "stick" when I release the clutch for stop signs/red lights. Check around at what others are using, and use their recommendations.
And don't get a Ford reman pressure plate - they don't clamp tight at all..

so if i dont run a 2.3T (for lack of finding one)and instead run a carb'd 2.0T with forged pistons and roughly 12 psi of boost, the clutch will hold up?what about the stock TC clutch?

i currently use a stock T/C pressure plate with a centerforce stage I/II disk and a T5 trans and it hasnt slipped at all ever(never used slicks yet). also i use an Aasco aluminum flywheel. im making around 290-300hp to the wheels but in a 2700lb truck. your clutch disk has to match your trans selection ie: ranger trans 23 spline vs T5 trans 10 spline

how about swapping to a rear transaxle to shift weight to the rear?

Just upgrade the clutch and be done with it. I wouldn't worry with the rear transaxle idea. Guys beat the stock tranny with 20lbs daily. No such thing as a dumb question. Why worry about shiftin the weight to the rear for 180-200hp?

if i go to a transaxle, i could get a 6 spd., and then i could go for 300 or 400 hp:) it would handle all the better for it.

Seems like a lot of work to me. If you can find one that will bolt to a ford Windsors v8 I.e. 289/302/351W then you could use the trans adapter. Rear suspension would have to be full custom.

I forgot this would be a option as well. Probably a better options at that. It's a adapter to mount a Ford 2.0/2.3 on a VW Rear Engine Trans Axle.

im betting he wants to use a corvette style transaxle, since most transaxles also need the motor bolted to it to use the clutch where as the corvette doesnt. you could prob use a regular clutch setup from a V8 ford with the torque tube, an adapter plate and a 26spline? clutch disk. lot of fabbing to do and may end up quite expensive but ill bet very doable.

Did you mean corvair?

nah i meant the vette because he mentioned a 6 speed trans. the corvair had a rear mounted 2.3(yep it did early on) flat six engine directly mated to either 2,3, or 4 speed transaxles. also the vette trans is still similar to the tremec T56.

Isn't the C6 Corvette transaxle a T56? I know the C5 isn't, but I thought the C6 was.

exactly whai i was thinking... if i am wrong, correct me, but i can mount the actual transaxle center in the frame, and run custom a-arms down to the rear hubs and run the axleshafts that way then the torque tube and clutch would need to be adapted... of course theres the matter of finding a wrecked c6 vette

i heard the vette's transaxle was the tremec TR-6060.
