So today I went to the jy to get some gt rear discs.... I found a nice 03 black gt with both of the rear wheels off and sitting up on blocks slightly.

I got the anti-moans off no prob, but the caliper bracket is pretty much a pain. I suddenly realized I have to pull the axels, but I dont really wanna do that in the middle of a jy sitting in the mud with a car barely off the ground. Anyone know a better way of doing this or a place besides north racecars to get a set of gt brackets? I cant do cobras since I dont have 17's yet either. If I need to I guess Ill pull the axels, I just didnt really wanna.

I would just pull the axles, should only take about 20 minutes.

Think of the money you'll be saving...

Ya, Ill have to get them to lift it up for me.... Its kind of in the mud. But ya youre right. Ill try to get one of my friends to help me. Too bad none of you guys live around here to give me a hand. Ill also have to grab a couple of calipers for the core charge....

Saving even more money :D

I'm not saying you should always take the cheaper option. But if a little bit of dirty work can save you a few bucks, why not?

Maybe it's just me though... I love going to a junk yard and discovering something I can use on my Ranger. It just makes it that much cooler of a modification.

Oh, and take some cardboard to cover up that mud.

I love the jy too. I dont get to go enough or work on my truck enough. I priced everything out, and it is not that expensive to do the rear brake swap if you get good jy parts. Im getting the brackets for $10, rotors pads and calipers for 150, so its 160 total with a couple hours of work, which isnt bad at all. I just didnt want to pull the axles... Why cant it just be easy all the time. HAHA

Just to let you guys know, if you decide to do it theres an abs sensor bolt that i think is a 6mm external hex to get it out. They both have to be taken out in order to get the axles in close enough to give the c-clips enough room to fall.
Figured id give u a heads up so ya know.

Or maybe it was torx... Either way took me a min to figure out why the c-clips were extruding far enough on my gear swap. Dumb moment. Lol

I know the point of pulling your own parts is saving money but if you don't have the time to pull the axles here's an alternative from Summit Racing:

$176 bones isn't all that bad...

What's the benefit of a gt axle vs an explorer 8.8" or are they the same and I am cornfused? That wouldn't be a bad deal except you still need pads, calipers, etc and he jacked the old ones for a core=even cheaper mod!

explorer 8.8 is a 31 spine rear end.. you can't use the brake parts on a ranger rear end. the mustang rear end is 28 spline, so the axle housing it the same size as the rangers, meaning you can use the mustang brakes on your rear end.

Ahhh got it now. Rather than upgrading to a 3.73 with discs and factory LS and spring under and more carrying capacity, you can buy a stang axle for the same price and swap the parts onto the 7" drum housing for a "performance upgrade?" Think I get it now......

those explorer rear ends are much much heavier than a 7.5 or ranger 8.8, and not to mention wider.

i read that they were wider before, but after finding one and swapping and all that stuff, its really not even noticeable to me.

They are 0.75" wider on each side than a 93+ rear end. Not very much, they are a pretty direct swap. The only downside is the fact that the parking brake uses shoes inside the rear disk and is not built into the caliper like on mustangs.

all aftermarket performance parts for the mustang will fit ranger 8.8.c clip eliminators, brake kits an gears. only 1 axle wont fit cause of length.
the explorer rear is using mostly f150 rear parts.
