Sorry for those who frequent both here and RPS but for those who dont!
SOOOOO been a bit since an update here goes!!
Friday - Was just playing around, searching the good ol www.car-part.com and came up with a running, complete, 2.3L dual plug from a 97 B2300.
Saturday - Got a bunch of money unexpectedly but was waiting for it.
Sunday - Waiting
Monday - FINALLY called the J/Y and they said the engine was still in the truck but, they would get to work on it right away. They said either that day or next day! Perfect.
Still monday - Guy calls me not even 3 hours later ... ITS OUT!! I was at a You-Pick-It J/Y at the time picking out a new cluster. They had a few new rangers/expos with clusters! YAY! $45CAN later I had one that works FINALLY.

Got the engine stand mount bolted to it so I could haul it inside with help of my big buddy haha.

I had just gotten the engine stand too! Cute girls at Princess Auto FTW!! She gave me, the last sale price + 20% off (employee discount) So it cost me $30 for a brand new stand. MWHAHAHA
The 2.3 in all of its beauty!

Sooo this thing had some serious weight that needed to be dropped so I could get it up on the stand by hand.
Started taking off the egr bolts.

At this point we had enough weight off + crap out of the way that we could get a good hold of it and hoist it up. Another friend was over atm so she helped push the stand in place.

Pulled the drain plug again just to let whatever splashed around in there come out. By the looks of it it had a blown headgasket as the oil is really diahrea-ish looking. BUT not known for sure yet. Probably find out tomorrow.

That's where I left off for today.
I haven't removed the harmonic balancer or others due to the fact I don't have air tools or even an electric impact atm. I will be borrowing one tomorrow or possibly buying one if I can find one for the right price. Should be fun!!!
Any comments are welcome. Any tips, things to look out for, etc etc very very welcomed as this is my first personal engine teardown and rebuild. I did a v8 in grade 11 autoshop but haven't touched anything since.
For those who are lost! This is for my 2.3 turbo build! YAY!!! TURBOOOOOOAH!

Looks good so far, your really ripping through this build! I'm thinking if the engine had a blown HG the compression wouldn't have been as high as it was.
fordnut71
09-10-2008, 09:14 AM
good score.
ya i dont think its a blown head gasket either, looks more like condsation from sitting in the yard.
an easy way to remove the ballancer bolt is to stuff the #1 cyl with some rope an turn the motor till it compresses it an the bolt will come out.
Riddle_Rob
09-10-2008, 11:43 AM
Yea that's why I was confused. If it had good compression it shouldn't have been the headgasket. Could very well be condensation. I'm not sure, I just know it came out pretty thick and soupy.
Interesting way of getting the bolt off. We'll see what happens today.

AND that's how I put it all away tonight. Left it alone. SOOO happy. The crankshaft spun smooooothly and freely. Pistons were in excellent shape. Headgasket ended up being good. There isnt a single score/mark/ding anything anywhere. Not a simple scratch. Couldn't have asked for a nicer looking engine internally.
SOOOOOO EXCITED hahaha. PHHHHHHHHHHHT SHHHHHHHHH

Ya mine was the same way after 230,000km's on it, it was mint. I love these engines.
What does everyone think about changing the freeze plugs? Should this be done or do they ever rust out?
How did you get the oil pump out?
I got the same engine stand at the same place a couple years ago probably from the same girl. I know a few that work in there and they'll always give me the extra extra extra discount lol.
Riddle_Rob
09-11-2008, 10:00 AM
Buddy used one of my new pry bars that I got in my kit from Crappy Tire that was on sale :) and held the sproket in place while I got the bolt out. Then I took off the sproket of course haha. Took out the 4 long bolts holding it in place and massaged it out ;) Just a couple taps of hammer with a flat screw driver to loosen then I wiggled it out.
ALSO wondering about the freeze plugs and the block heater. Should I even bother ripping it out or even reconnecting it? I never use it and never will. It needs to be there to fill the hole but can I pretty much just paint over it?
Riddle_Rob
09-11-2008, 06:51 PM
Asked my mechanic friend today. He said if the freeze plugs looks good and aren't rotton, leave them. Same goes for the heater.
While I was there, I ordered up everything I need. A whole gasket kit, arp studs, felpro gasket, rod bearings, crank bearings, seals then talked about possible other parts. YAY!
fordnut71
09-11-2008, 07:51 PM
looks good. can see you still have a crosshatch:thumbsup: . the problem with frost plugs is they rot from the inside out. so it may look good on the outside.
so now you have to get to it with some simple green an a garden hose to clean up the block an some new paint. use wd40 on the cyls.

I'm transferring stuff to my buddys shop. He specializes in high HP 5.0's and mustangs in general. So he knows his **** and owes me some shop time. He's giving me parts at cost and helping when I need it for the build since im 100% noob haha.
Not doing anything on it tonight. Going to take it to his shop tomorrow, starting with the block, crankshaft (misc parts for that) and turbo pistons/rods :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Unfortunely nothing too too major.
I cleaned up the block, its sitting WD-40 soaked now in a garbage bag on the engine stand. My parts should be in this week. Everything except the new rings because apparently I didn't decide which ones I wanted LOL silly guy I deal with.
Grabbed all new bearings, seals, ARP rod bolts etc... bottom end should be good n proper. Crank getting sent away shortly as well.

i am using the hastings rings in the B2 and they are very nice. seated the first time and very nice compression.

r u going to have the block sent out and machined or r u just going to hone it.
i need suggestion on my 2000 Rangr w/140k, i cant decide wether 2 gett it machined when i get forged pistons or to hone it and drop in the new stuf.

Can't believe I missed this thread
Looks good! I would go with hasting rings, a light hone and you will be set.
BTW with the 2.3L I have ran the last part of this year hasting ring's & light hone = 150PSI comp on all 4.

01-03-2009, 12:26 AM
Ahh. The project has been on hold for a couple months. I'm so broke I'm glad I have a wireless card for internet :(
I'm not sure what I'm going to get for rings yet. My "advisor" lol buddy that owns the shop, will probably get me to get the brand he uses in his 8 second mustang. Apparently, they are inexpensive but, incredibly good.

Everytime I do a rebuild from a donor engine, I'll go thru every inch of the block, including the water jacket, "freeze plugs". Anytime you get anything from a wrecking yard just remember you inheirted some else's headache.
Remove the water jacket plugs and see if you can't give it a good sovent bath to clean out oil gallys & the water jacket after years of build up. Check for cracks in the inside of the block, have it fluxed, (sp).
Go from scratch, that's the way I do 'er............Lee

did you number the connecting rods with the caps they were connected to? i think you have to do that or it could mean big trouble.
Riddle_Rob
01-04-2009, 04:53 PM
How would I go about doing that if I'm using new rods from the TC ;)
New bearrings, rods, pistons, rings, rod bolts, seals so far. The block has been cleaned up entirely including the water jacket and other nooks n crannies. When I get the final part (rings) I will go about doing more to it as I will be in rebuilt mode.

The rods and caps are matched pairs. They cannot be switched or reversed. You can tell if it is correct. Assemble the cap to the rod without a bearing and check for a perfect fit where the bearings will sit.
Riddle_Rob
01-06-2009, 08:21 PM
Ahh, the ones I got from the turbo engine are all matched yes. Sorry, was day dreamin haha. They came bolted together, numbered and still had the original bearings in them.
Riddle_Rob
03-02-2009, 12:06 AM
Yep. After cleaning the pistons and rods up I found that they came stamped with the numbers on them right where the caps and rods hold together.
Here's a few updates.
Teaser to start the night :P
More pics once I get them uploaded.

Welp. Got somewhere's today :)
Removed the block heater and replaced with a freeze plug. Also, got the block all painted up in classic Ford Dark Blue (not light lol).
This is what I have for pics at the moment. My interwebs is being retardedly gay for uploading right now. Not sure why. I will have pics of final paint with tape off when it works. Probably later tonight.
So here's the pics as promised. I grabbed a replacement plug today it was 1.5".

Found the biggest socket that would fit inside of the plug. Was 1".
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f46/Riddle_Rob/Stranger%20Build/IMG_7112Large.jpg
Hammered on the socket evenly so the plug went in even. Put it in almost flush then tapped the edges of the plug to make sure it was completely flush.

I decided to paint over the freeze plugs. They will still pop out the same, I just didn't feel like having the shiney discs showing.

Does it get leaky? Even with a brand new gasket? I still have the old one but, I will be grabbing a new one when the time comes I need it.
Anyone know where I can get a new oil pickup tube? The one I have is really really gungy. Debating getting a new one vs cleaning up the old.
The Canadian sites I've been visiting are useless, ebay has nothing, and most of my "spending" money is on paypal LOL
nagelandy55
03-02-2009, 05:48 PM
Ya even a new one will leak. The ford service manual says to put dabs of gasket maker at the 90° bends (around the bearing housings). But i put a bead all around this time to make damn sure it doesn't leak.

Soooo. I got bored and cleaned up all of my pistons, rods, crank, and block a bit more.
I cleaned and scraped the crap out of the ring channels. It was baked in. Used Chiltons method of using a ring that was broken in half and scraping it out. (I don't have the special little tool thinger)
Took some 2000 grit emery cloth to areas that I felt needed it.
Also cleaned up the main bolts and hammered out the rod studs. The ARP's will probably go in tonight.
Also, won myself a 90mm maf today for $41US shipped LOL. The guy had it listed as a "LIGHTing" maf. Poor guy, his loss my gain.
Looking for piston rings and a hone now. Then I'm good to put some stuff together.
Also found a H1C turbo from a truck with 160000kms on it today for $100. Might hafta go pick that up.
Here's some quick compairison pictures for what I did. The streaks weren't scorring. I ran my finger nail over everything and didn't feel a single groove, edge or anything. It was just burnt on oil that streaked funny.

Here's a couple pics of before I cleaned it up and of the block with the cleaned up mains + oil pickup tube.

So I busted out the oil pump last night. Ended up breaking the sensor off of it. Not sure what it's for or called LOL I just hope my spare engine is the same way so I can punk that part.
That is the cam sensor. If you got a nether 95 or newer motor you should have a spare.
Riddle_Rob
03-11-2009, 01:41 PM
Figures. Yea, I have a spare. This engine was bought specifically for this project so I still have the original in my truck. While dissasembling the TPS was broken as well :( grrrr lol. YAY FOR SPARES!! LOL
That crap was just straight sludge. I could pick it up like slime.
Would it make sense to try and smooth out all of the casting imperfections? All of those veiny looking lines or am I just going overboard?

i would leave them not worth the time................

haha i've thought about smoothing them out but its not worth it. Spend the time cleaning the outside and deburring it if anything.
Riddle_Rob
03-11-2009, 11:20 PM
I plan on doing that. I'm hoping to get the outside media blasted and either painted or coated depending on price. Going to get a new valve cover and do the same color on it (different from block though). My cover is rusty so a new one is in order.

After some thought... WHY do I want to pay money to have it blasted etc? I found a couple of wire brushes today haha and got some more cleaner and went to town. Was pretty happy with the results. Did the same with the water pump.

I don't plan on running the stock clutch fan thus me painting over the bolt holes and nipple on the water pump.
It's all dried up today and looks pretty damn good. Just have to clean up the mating edge for the block/pan.

At a bit of a stand still atm with this. No money coming in = no new parts.
The last of my parts I've purchased so far came in today though :D Got my BRAND NEW 90MM MAF that I won for $30US on ebay LOL plus $5 shipping AND marked as a gift so no duties. The guy was super awesome. Helped out huge :D AND It's tested, working and 100% legit Ford item :D
For right now, the decision has been made to just put the new tranny in the truck and drive it. I'll eventually start saving money by doing that as insurance is cheaper and doesn't guzzle as much gas as my 4.0 XLT Explorer.

I got bored today and figured I'd play with some things to get spirits up and take pics.
Everythings been cleaned as far as shortblock goes. Bolts, pumps, pulleys etc.
Bare block still sitting on stand. All bolts ready to go.

Tee hee. Fel-Pro gaskets for everything. Even water pump, front crank seal, main seal etc... Also the 3 layer steel Fel-Pro 1035 head gasket. That baby was $100 by itself.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f46/Riddle_Rob/Stranger%20Build/IMG_8273Large.jpg
Also pictured is my new Garrett turbo, 38mm wastegate, Garrett downpipe with o2 bung, RFL BOV and of course stainless header.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f46/Riddle_Rob/Stranger%20Build/IMG_8284Large.jpg
Then the real fun began. I temp mocked up the turbo to the header. Was debating whether I wanted to just run 10psi from the internal wastegate for now then upgrade to my 38mm later and just run a block off plate on my header for now OR just use the 38mm. Was checking for clearance issues as well.

Soooo, that's how it sits for now.
The head needs to be cleaned. Dismantled and have everything checked over. Probably going to rebuild it but, no port n polish. Since it's already a really great flowing head.
Working on a new job now so I can finish the project.
Parts not pictured that I have:
- 90mm lightning maf
- 60lbs supra injectors (might be selling to get different ones)
- clevite 77 connecting rod bearings
- forged pistons + rods
- Sealed Power moly piston rings
- smoothed and painted oil pan
- header, turbo, wastegate gaskets
Parts needed:
- main bearings
- 2 rod bolts
- FMIC (sold my last one)
- more charge pipe and couplers
- maybe new injectors
- SCT Xcalibrator 3
- valve cover (mines got rust/want turbocoupe one)
- head rebuild kit
- OIL!!!

I would put the 38mm wastegate on right off the bat. Not sure what the lowest psi you can run is with it but i imagine it can do 10psi. You'll wanna turn it up to 15 pretty quick anyways.
Why not port and polish the head while you have some time? Its the cheapest power you'll ever make if you've got access to a die grinder and bits.
Looks good, hope to see that beast finished some day!
Riddle_Rob
06-17-2009, 10:55 PM
Yea, that's what I was thinking. It's just I've got to get the flapper for the internal gate welded shut then.
Pretty sure the spring in my 38mm is for 10psi. Could be more. Honestly can't remember.
I have a dremel type tool if that's what you mean.
Don't really want to screw it up my first time out hahaha. I know I could easily just get another head fairly cheap. Mainly cause I'm lazy.
I hope to see it finished as well man. Maybe once I get the Explorer fixed up and sold.

Riddle_Rob
06-23-2009, 08:30 AM
Not yet. There's a super awesome shop in town that I'm going to go to get hopefully a 90degree elbow to the downpipe. Ideally, this turbo would make more sense on the oem header but, I didn't know what turbo I was buying when I bought the header well over a year ago.

r u going to have the block sent out and machined or r u just going to hone it.
i need suggestion on my 2000 Rangr w/140k, i cant decide wether 2 gett it machined when i get forged pistons or to hone it and drop in the new stuf.
If your gonna use your 2.5L crank the only pistons are .030 over, same i got. but if you switch to the 2.3L crank just a hone and you'll be fine
radrangerXLT
08-26-2009, 05:27 PM
Lookin fly guy! What did you end up doing for the hone? Professional or a home job?
I'm also with Andreas, I would P&P the combustion chambers and get the valve seats re-done while you have the head all apart. Then again, stock head should make plenty of power.... for now at least.
You give me motivation:thumbsup:

Well. The hone job was done by me. I went out and bought a hone just to hone 4 cylinders LOL. I haven't gone to a "shop" for anything except parts, which ultimately were wrong. Ebay/internet ftw.
My head was measured at approx 57cc's the other day. I'm going to just clean it up, check springs and reassemble. I want this thing in the truck and running before the snow comes. THEEEEENNNN I will take the head back off and do some nice head work. That's why I went with head studs ;)
I got a lot more build today. Pictures later.

New page? Yay new page.
So after breaking the bolt in the front crank cover for the crank sensor AND much advice. I tapped it. LOL Used a bolt that I HAD and fit thru the hole on the sensor and had a tap for. Voila! For those wondering, it's a fender bolt from the red explorer I parted out.

Now, from the last time... I got the cylinder head put back together. Cleaned up all of the valves, the head, checked tolerances on the springs and checked the seals. Everything was good, which was to be expected on an engine with 110k kms on it.
Anyways, some progress tonight.
Put the head on with the ARP head studs :) Love em. Hurray for reusable.
Threw the oem valve cover on (it's clean on the inside so don't worry about the crud on the outside) just to protect everything.
Put the stainless header on :) With stainless hardware and wastegate.
THEN put the turbo on, not tightened down yet but, it's holding.
Just 3 simple pictures.

Also clocked the turbo and the wastegate to where I believe I want them. Might have to be clocked again later but, meh. Found out that I COULD actually clock the WG so I was happy.
So, I've been explaining this to a few people but, time to post.
Since I'm using a TOP MOUNT turbo manifold instead of an oem side mount I have to do some modifications to a few things.
First, I can't use the garrett elbow that I have for downpipe and o2 bung.
Second, the coil packs were in the way (expected this).
THIRD the tower that holds the coil packs, alternator, water pump pipe, and belt tensioner hits the turbo as well :(
Time to MODIFY! lol..
Started off with a hacksaw for fun since it was 10pm and didn't wanna bust out the grinder.

With research I found that most just cut the tower right down so only 2 bolts hold it on instead of 3 (top one is removed).
Well I wanted to retain that 3rd bolt so had some fun with cutting/shaping.
Then I busted out the grinder today.
Some shots of just the tower.

THEN! I want to keep the engine bay simple and clean. I'm going to get a new upper intake made up. Got started by hackin off the bottom portion that I will need to bolt it to the lower intake piping. Don't have a before picture but, you can get the idea.

I'm trying to find a cheap TB atm. Want to go large right away so no need to upgrade later.

i like the idea of sawing the bottom of the upper intake off for the platform. Very smart lol i was thinking make a template and have it cut out. I might have to get creative as well. Good work

Gee thanks! LOL
I haven't had a chance to work on the engine this week. Too busy fixing lug studs on family car. So glad they just hammer out but, not glad they cost nearly $8 each after tax.
I did however get one coat of paint on the coil tower. Should look good after another.
OH, I didn't update here...I got another update.

Ok, so I hated the plain ol' Ranger valve cover. So I got one off a Tunderbird Turbocoupe. It's not the exact one I wanted but, will due until I find one that I want that's not retardedly priced.
This one being off an 87 needed a freshen up.
It was actually supringly in amazing shape to start out with. I was happy with that. No major dents, dings, pieces missing etc. Still had a good supply of original paint and wasn't too oxidized.

Well I don't have pics of what it started out like but, here's the next best thing. I washed the grease off and in this pic there's paint stripper on it working in.

Here's after a bunch of key spots targetted with stripper again and using a wire brush now instead of scraper.
It's soaking now, being washed up. Got a lot of the oxidization off and paint. Little bit left to go.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f46/Riddle_Rob/Stranger%20Build/engine013Large-1.jpg
Now, I have full intensions of stripping this completely and sanding it mirror smooth BUT! Here's my dilemma ...
I don't know if I should paint it same color as block with polished ribs, same black as oil pan and coil tower etc... with polished ribs or just polish the whole thing.

Does anyone near you do powdercoating? Its inexpensive and will last alot longer than rattlecan

Yea they do and it's $50 for a valve cover :(

I stripped my valve cover and then just polished it, paint will always chip off or get messed up when dealing with aluminum because the aluminum oxidizes under the paint. I was urged to just polish it by a guy who's been building hot-rods for 40 yrs. The great thing is that if it starts to oxidize all you have to do is put a little metal polish on a rag and its good as new!

I would maybe do anodized but I don't know about powercoating, isn't that dangerous since its aluminum. I like the black and silver skeam. I would almost just leave it polished if the block and head are gonna be black. Of course this is just my personal opinion. :turbob:

I think there will be more and more info on OBD I computers so don't worry. I have a 92 and I am keeping the computer, and using the F3 chip most likely or the quarterhorse. There is also the Megasquirt, but I think this is harder to do. I did find someone that is doing a 92 with a megasquirt that is suppose to keep in contact to how it goes. I think I am gonna be buying another ranger to, with a 2.3 that will be my V8 swap. This way I can have an extra engine to build up better in the future. Might be a 93 cause I do like the body difference too.

Not too worried about it right now. A lot of these pieces will be replaced with the second head :)
