sure, there are lots of garrett turbos that would be good for your ranger.

what is the ultimate goal? if you are just looking for around 250 or so hp then a garret t3 with a .48 exhaust side would be just fine between 15 and 20psi.

anything more than that and you'll have to start doing some research. if you go to the garret website, they have a downloadable write up that explains about how to size a turbo for your application.

personally i am running a t3/t4 hybrid turbo and probably will stick with it. i don't feel the need to go to a holset yet.

I think T3 is the flange type that the turbo mounts to. All stock turbo fords had headers with a T3 turbo flange.
Garrett is a turbo manufacturer.
Alot of the stock turbo's are Garrett. If its not a Garret its an IHI, but these are too small for the kind of power your trying to make.
I'm running the biggest Garret turbo that came stock on turbo ford cars, which is the .63 A/R
I'm making around 250whp and its none too big, i can get it spooling before 2000rpm no problem and i still have a stock E6 manifold and stock downpipe.
I think you'd at least want to go with a T3/T4 for 300hp maybe even a holset Hy35.
If you get a hold of some compressor maps you'll get an idea on how good a turbo is for your application

Check this out if you don't know how to read a compressor map, its not too bad.

Maybe everyone can post up their mods and at what RPM they start to see boost and at what RPM they see full boost (and what full boost is)

Well... lets see i got to find a set of pistons.. advanced said they were forged.. till i went in and looked at there screen and it said cast... lol so ill back to looking for Pistons and rings, rods and bearings.. i plan on getting the header off here and making a custom intake, sorta like jess's then i have to find a turbo, which ill end up getting prolly a t3/t4 turbo, and an intercooler to go with it.. pretty much ill have a t3/t4 turbo with 42# green top injectors, a custom top intake manifold, sct tuner software, 38mm wastegate, 3inch downpipe, a 8.8 rearend with 4:10 gears, and im trying to either figure out if im going to make a custom Tb adapter for a twinblade Tb or just use a mustang 60mm TB, ill prolly run straight exhaust off the dp to the back and thats pretty much it.. juust got to find the stuff i need.. oh yah and a 90mm lightning MAF, and all the stuff for tuning... i plan on this taking a while to get it all done, that way it will all be done right... my plans for the truck, is to get the motor/Turbo setup, and make plenty of power for Offroad/street power prolly 250rwhp-300rwhp, i just need parts.. lol i got it all planned in my head, and i can get the cash

maybe i missed it but is there a header or manifold in there?

seriously get the hy35 holset. cheap comparable to a hybrid t3/t4. has a big compressor and smallish turbine. the 9 cm turbine housing is comparable to a .63 a/r garrett but has a bigger turbine wheel for more high rpm flow. the compressor will flow enough for about 400 hp. will have a fairly quick spool followed by a nice steady pull to topend. did i mention the price, its about a 1/3 of the garrett. you want a hammer get the hx35. you want a singlejack get the hx40. holset makes a damn fine turbocharger they just made the mistake of putting them on dodges.... we are correcting it

I prefer Garretts.

Fritz is right about the price and those dodge turbos just happen to be sized really well for our 2.3 engines. Good quality for sure too.

The main thing I like about the garretts is that you have so many choices. You can really tailor the turbo charger to whatever you want.

T3/T4 - TO4E 46 trim compressor. Stage 3 turbine wheel w/.84 a/r housing.

you can do the same thing with holsets.... its just that no one seems to know what they are doing with them. and the one that do know are keeping there cards close to their chest.

the newer garrett turbos have seemed to caught up with holset tech, but for a while there holset and shwitzer were the only turbos available that had a surge suppression ring. now if you dont know what surge is then well you've never had to big of a turbo on your car. surge happens when the compressor wheel looses traction on the air that it moving and for a brief second over speeds. then it bites back on the air again. rinse and repeat enough and the turbo will either spit a shaft or break of blades. it all has to do with air flow. the aint-surge rings recirculate air through the compressor wheel so it never looses its bite. ive had an hx35 at 20 psi at 1500 rpms with no surge.

what this means is you can get full boost way lower in the rpm range, delivering more power through out the rpm curve. where before you couldnt do it without running into the compressor maps surge line.
