2.3l,3.0l,4.0l all share a different bell housing.
2.3l an 3.0l share the same internals
4.0l is a different gear ratios inside.
i take it that its a manual though.

Manual 4.0L are extremely rare. The M50D transmission is a weak transmission within the manual world, and really can't handle the torque of the 4.0L, so very few 4.0L with manuals trans were made. The bellhousing is made as part of the trans, so you need the right one.

If you are dealing with an automatic, which is unlikely as the parts for those are easy to find, the bellhousings are not part of the trans, and can be interchanged as needed.

I would try to see if there is an adapter for a T5 trans.

He could put a t5 in but for the 4x4 to work he'd have to use a divorced transfer case..

Cruise craigslist and the Junk yards and you'll find one eventually

uh i'm pretty sure the 2.3 is totally different from the 3.0 and 4.0

3.0 and 4.0...... maybe.....

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/InterchangingTansmissions.html here this will help. 2.9 rangers have the same, not 2.3's. and the 3.0 looks to be different from the others also
