I have a possible replacement truck for cheap to replace the cummins for going back to ND, but it has an internal slave cylinder that needs replaced, which makes me think its a M50D, allthough parts list shows it could be a ZF, and I don't know what that looks like or if it has a internal slave cylinder. Sure one of you can give me a quick answer to give peace of mind on ordering the new clutch.

What is the trans hoked up to? Big block,Small Block or Diesel. I thank the ZF has a plates on it for a PTO. and the m5od does not. And I thank the ZF has an external slave cylinder.

Pretty sure ZF's only came behind diseasels. If the top cover has three smallish black rubber plugs at the rear (they seal the shift-rail bores), it's an M50D. If so, be sure to remove those plugs, clean 'em with brakleen and reinstall 'em with silicone sealant - as they're a common source of oil leakage. http://forum.turboford.org/ubb/graemlins/dunno.gif

From what I looked up it could be either. Its a 1995 ford f250 5.0 5speed. 2wd. I used car-parts.com as a referance to what they came with, and they have both for 5.0 engines according to there chart, and all 4.9s came with ZF trannys.

I won't argue - at least not until I have time to go out in the garage and consult my Ford trannie book, lol. I was a HD Line Tech, working at various Ford dealerships from about '75 thru '96 and I could've sworn that I only saw ZF's behind diseasels. Did you have a chance to look for the black rubber plugs in the top cover, as I mentioned earlier? http://forum.turboford.org/ubb/graemlins/dunno.gif

I don't have the truck yet as I am in the process of selling one, and getting the other. I just want to have the parts ordered so I can get a whole clutch and slave cylinder before I have to make the switch so I have a truck to haul my camper around. Got alot on my plate lately, and gonna have to make a custom gooseneck hitch soon too. Gonna make my own b w flip goose neck hitch. Gonna be cool.

I don't have the truck yet......I just want to have the parts ordered......

In that case, I suggest calling the seller for the VIN, then contacting your local Ford parts counter person. He/she should be able to tell you what transmission it's equipped with. http://forum.turboford.org/ubb/graemlins/dunno.gif

BTW - I have a B&W Turnover Ball Hitch in my Tundra. It works really well and gives me a flat bed in about 15-30 seconds!

Getting pretty crafty and looking at making my own drop down gooseneck hitch. Figure I can make a better one for less than 100.00 and most of that is the ball.

So I found some pics of what the differant trannys look like, and found the answer to why some come with and some don't. Its matters if the truck is a heavy duty or not. Think mine isn't but kinda hope it is, cause the ZF is the better tranny. Going to jump start it tomarrow, and get it going. Sucks cause I wanted to order the clutch kit to have it here by this weekend. Need a HD clutch as I will be towing with it at some point. Might end up being a project truck years down the road. found a few zfs locally for 2wds but I would need the drivelines as well cause they are shorter. Both truck had 351w so more fingers point to m50d.

Okay so I drove the truck home, after 3 hours of messing with a dead battery. Have no slave cylinder, so have to start in 1st, and hard to do when jump starting it. Tried to jump start it and then get it rolling downhill to pop it in gear, but just couldn't get it out of a rut it was stuck in. So drove it 12miles to my house from my old work with no clutch, but now I can inspect it and get this back on the road. Gotta love walmart 3 year free replacement neverstarts. Put a two year old one from the gmc on the charger last night and sure enough it was bad, so got a brand new 90.00 one for free that was the right one for the ford(topmount).

Have you found out what trans is in it? look under it and see if it is a ZF,you can see the pto plate on the side that has 6 bolts in it.The small block ZFs might have only came in the f350s, I helped a friend put one in a 75 F250. After I put a m5od in my bronco a week later the slave cylinder went out 10mi from my house. It sucked trying to rev match to shift.

It really helps that I drive semi trucks for a living, that I only missed one shift. Having a tach would have really helped. It was late by the time I got home and cold, so I will go out right now and do it. Pretty sure its the M50D, now that I know its not the heavy duty. I am interested in getting the ZF from the junkyard for a possible replacement. comes out of a hd with a 351w.

Its a M50D. No pto cover:(, but it does look like I have plenty of room to take the tranny out, with one cat convertor possibly in the way only. Think its possible that I have a air bubble in the line as it was loosing fluid and my dad added fluid, but I think it was way down at one point and adding fluid didn't help. Happened once before, and just topped the fluid off and it came back. Think if I just bleed the system I could temporarily drive it till the parts come in. I was thinking of trying the youtube bleeding trick.

What are the chances the master cylinder is the problem? I found a few clutch kits, and one for pretty cheap.

Only problem, is it doesn't look like it comes with a line tool to remove the line from the slave. Looked at a line kit with master, and they are another 180.00 but have the tool. I think it should come with the clutch kit, as most pull the tranny to do this, I believe. I can get the kit from napa for 210.00 but it doesn't look to come with the tool either.

Is it leaking inside the cab? I've never seen a Ford clutch master leaking (OTOH, Hondas leak all the time).....but I've seen lots of leaking Ford slaves. They usually don't leak bad enough to prevent operation, however, as long as the m/cyl reservoir hasn't run "dry". I suggest bleeding it manually, while making sure the m/cyl doesn't drop below, say, 1/4 full. This will require two people.

I have a couple of the line-release tools - one from Ford and another that was included with a clutch kit - but the tube can be released without it. You just need to press the little white color inward - toward the trans - with a pair of pocket screwdrivers (or similar). Then, while holding the collar fully depressed, have a buddy pull out the line. He may have to "woggle" it around a little bit before it releases - but that's often necessary even with the tool. http://forum.turboford.org/ubb/graemlins/dunno.gif

Ended up taking the tranny out, getting the flywheel turned, new clutch, disc, and slave. Gonna do the pro bleeding, and it should be done for a long time. At least one can hope. I know own a usa made clutch line release tool. Only cost like 3.50 and it worked great. Alot better than the made in thaiwan pieces of shit that come with the kits.
