k guys. I'm ready to start my long and tedious process of slowly but surely building a turbo motor. I have a good idea of everything I need (many thanks to all). The parts list by Jess gives a solid build especially for the price. My question : Are you guys having all of this stuff machined? I ask because the 3 grand for the parts isn't that bad, but the machining for all of it is substantial. By machining I mean:
pistons made same weight, balanced, skirt length etc
rods made same weight, length, balanced, clearanced
hot tank and magnaflux the block
line hone main bearings and add maybe adding 4 bolt main caps (if possible)
deck the top of the block
clean polish and maybe shot peen crank
index crank and balancing
port and polish the head (i know alot of you do this for volume gain)
etc
I know that all of this adds up to mega power, but is it necessary for the 300+ hp?
:thanks:

Not needed for 300hp but they are all probably a good idea if you want to make an all out race motor. I would PP the heada and have it decked if it needs to be.

only machine NEEDED is to p&p the head. most folks are using factory parts, and turning up boost, adding fuel and using them as daily drivers with 300hp that are very streetable. like nagelandy said all the other maching is a good idea for an all out race motor, but not necessary for the majority

depends on what you are doing. if you are not seperating stock parts you dont need a balance. but if your mismatching stuff then yes you need to rebalance. new rods will come to you roughly the same weight. if you putting them with new or used pistons too then rebalance. the crank needs nothing but cleaned if the journals are all still in spec. i inspect things when i take them apart to access what needs replaced and what needs remachined. a good set of dial calipers helps.
indexing crank and rebalancing is not needed unless you suspect it has been twisted. shot peening... no.
never heard of anyone breaking the current main caps to warrent a another exspence.

What are your expectation of this motor? Is it going to be a driver with extra power and how much or are you looking for a race motor that you can drive on the street? What are your target hp numbers or et and vehicle weight?

The only machining I ever had done on a bottom end was boring the block. It's like 100$ Generally on a stock crank and some used turbo rods and pistons you don't need them balanced.
