View Full Version : Turbo Duratec....How to?
Hey guys, new to the Ford Ranger scene. Most of the people on FRF were telling me that the Duratec 2.3 was not capable of much power...then I discovered that it can be turbocharged:turbob:. So I have some questions.
What all do I need to turbocharge my 2001 Ford Ranger XLT regular cab 5-speed manual? It has 69,000 miles on it. (I was told that I need a turbo manifold from a Ford Focus)
Will a turbocharger limit my engines lifespan, my transmissions lifespan?
I am not looking for an enormous amount of power... So what is easily obtainable and will not do any damage to my vehicle?
How bad will my gas mileage drop with the addition of a turbocharger?
Any and all constructive feedback will be appreciated. Thanks

the Duratec LOVE boost, Rangergt hit 16 psi on a stock internal.
and for power, you are able to double your stock one pretty easily.
but forget all idea about using any market parts, the focus mani will only be good if you cut it and only keep the flange lol.
you need to have some fabrication skill or money!
for the lifespan, it's depend of your hp goal, tuner and driver attitude :D
read a lot first and than ask your question:yesnod:
it will be a pleasure to help you in your project.:peelout:
ps. for the FRF though, information should always be double check:hehe:

3 threads for reading that i think might answer all your questions...mine will especially answer your focus parts question

JSV's page this should help with just about everything its a remote setup but a turbo setup none the less

this is my thread i havnt started the build but a lot of the questions you HAVE and will SEEK i did the liberty of asking :) and the guys gave me lots of answers a good 12 pages worth....
And i would look through any threads Rangergt has started all of his are good reads with lots of info about the duratec and rangers in general
if you want to turbo your truck from all the research and locals I've talked to its not really an easy task as you will find that every part that is external like and exhaust manifold and an intake manifold all have to be custom made...thats were the $ comes in...what i plan is one to have another vehicle to drive before you start and 2 find someone who can weld good that will do it for free this will save you a lot of money or you can do what I'm doing and go to school for welding and build the 2 expensive pieces like the intake manifold and exhaust manifold in school...really the only thing i see that is on our sides is all the internal parts you find for a ford focus 2.3 dtec will fit in our motors just most of the external stuff won't...well everything really fits but the problem is like the exhaust mani from a focus puts the turbo in our firewall hence all the custom stuff needs to be made.....
BUT don't let this stuff scare you once you read stuff figure stuff out like i have i can't wait to take on the challenge its going to be a fun build and also scare some people that yes a white XL fleet truck ranger just beat your dodge srt4, eclipse, corvette, etc
Mmm... that sounds overly pricey and inconvenient...two things I don't like.
Any idea how much power I can get out of the 2.3 Duratec without putting a turbo on it? From what I've read on FRF people are saying it is almost impossible to add powers to the duratec 2.3 without a turbo.

... ya it's impossible
look for article on the web about n/a duratec ability to perform !!!
those engine with only a better intake, header and tune are beast. spec car race with them over 220whp w/o boost.
but if you can afford tuning you shouldn't think of it.
no matter what you are building a N/A or boosted engine, you will have to pass on those problematic:
injectors
intake
header
piping
ecu flasher
optional:
porting
cam
etc
the only diff between the 2 option is to put a turbo in the budget, oil system, a bit more piping, intercooler... but a lot more power

really i don't think it would cost a lot to double your HP n/a its just different really....
what most don't realize is yes 200hp may not be a lot but think of what power you have now and double it...these trucks are pretty light small hp goes along way...
^^^^jsv couldn't have said it better
not to mention with n/a they sound awesome with cams

Then you've been on the wrong forum listening to the wrong people. I wonder how many of them have actually tried to add any real performance to the 2.3 duratec? Hmm, I'll guess zero.
There is lots of info here but if your looking for something more or different then I'll be glad to point you in the right direction to find it because as you've already found it's easier to find bad info than good. welcome to the forum.
