View Full Version : the notch gets down with the sickness...

finally managed to get down to the floor in the garage. yes there is concrete lol. all my shelves are built, and most everything is organized as best as i can do for the time allotted.

the plan. tomorrow the car is coming in. get the engine buttoned back up from all the parts i robbed off of it for the B2.

pull all the timing pulleys and convert to the round tooth.
put on the EDIS crank position sensor cover.
mod the water pump inlet for the EDIS sensor clearance (saw-off 3/4").
mount 36-1 wheel with pulley.
get the new scroll-gated Paired header mounted with the HX40 and External waste-gate.
mount the 4" down pipe, O2 sensors (Wide and Narrow band)
start fitting up the Compressor inlet pipes, and mod the intercooler pipes.

fire it up just to hear it though the 40 and open DP. watch the beautiful actuation of the scroll-gate.

then its up on the jack-stands and its on the the 4" stainless exhaust to the rear axle with a butterfly dump and then 3" stainless over the axle into my brand new internally modded 5" Supertrapp. no more "and thens".

then its my custom sub-frame connectors and stitch welding up the 4 link torque boxes.

then its on to the interior. rear seat delete. followed by paneling up the gaping hole left from the seat. carpet removal and front seat removal for the center hoop and rear roll bars install.

shorten the aluminum drive shaft i pulled out of the JY.
somewhere in the middle of all the chaos when i get the center force II pressure plate the trany is coming out and thats going in.

make some brackets for the E-brake cable pulls on the T-bird 8.8 disk rear.

fill the trunk with about 500 pounds and roll the lips on the rear fenders.

getting the stock 10 hole wheels cut and adding 2" to the width and on to some 10 inch ET Streets or M&H Racemasters. haven't decided yet on that one.

pull the stock dash pad and fab up an aluminum one with gauge pods. put all my digital Aberdeen gauges in. oil pressure and temp, boost, A/F NarBand, water temp, and fuel pressure.

get to the dyno for a baseline. then the head comes off and the 94 ranger UnPro PORTED, Dual plug, BIG VALVE head goes on (hopefully with an essy 2277 cam by then). megasquirt gets wired in. propane bottle goes in the trunk, and the intake for dual fuel goes on and stang gets set to kill. 40 PSI on propane.

AND THEN :hehe: the car gets put into suede (semi-gloss black) bumper to bumper, no chrome.

pics to follow. we are stoked!

all right, all right! i'll get some pics up.

got the downpipe and wastegate discharge done.
took half the damn day though. i hate redesigning stuff. one little change and nothing fits.

if it wouldnt have started raining i would have the car in the garage right now.
soon as it stops i'll have it in and start bolting everything up.

its going to be a daily driver and a track-dyno queen, test mule, Guinea pig and whatever else i feel like doing with it :yikes:. i don't plan to sit down on this car. Ive got 16 years of R&D to do on it before the perfect car can be handed over to my son :P.

every odd thing Ive been wanting to do... well this is the car your going to see it get done on.

Whoa whoa whoa, wait just a minute. Your saying theres actually room in that garage for a stang?LOL

Cant wait to see this thing running! You still planning on taking it to Akron HP? If you are let me know I want to see this thing in action.

AJ_Fritz
10-27-2008, 10:52 PM
yup. soon as the pressure plate comes in it should be ready for a baseline.

rick came over today and helped me pull and push it into the garage.

header is on. cant fine my oil drain. have to pick up another one tomorrow.

AJ_Fritz
11-03-2008, 11:50 AM
its not true, but i do have the header, turbo, downpipe all mounted. working on the rest of the exhaust now.

i'll get some pics up but man this engine got rusty sitting for 8 months.

D94R
11-03-2008, 12:00 PM
I find an oil leak is a good rust preventer, especially for when you pull the engine and let it sit for 8 months lol.

AJ_Fritz
11-03-2008, 10:26 PM
crap i know i shouldnt have plugged them all... ;)

AJ_Fritz
11-17-2008, 10:14 PM
got the exhaust done over the weekend. down pipe leaks around the flex to solid pipe. knew i should have just welded a slip joint to it, oh well. i'll fix that when i get the hanger built for the converter.

got it running sunday, funny thing runs with out the VAM hooked up lol. everyone else says it dont work but she purrs and revs with no VAM

thought the turbo was good, well it turbine side is good. no oil leaking. compressor side has a small leak :(. might be my oil drain line doesnt have enough fall so i got to check that out to. hopefully thats it.

now to redo the charge pipes and intercooler.

on a side note found the problem with clutch. still have a good PP and disc in it, but had to rebuild the cable transfer linkage that attaches to the bellhousing. locked a bearing up in it tighter then...well tight! had to use a flywheel puller to get the linkage off. what a b!tch! removed the plastic bushing in for the cable pins and made some brass ones. works like butter now.

D94R
11-17-2008, 10:40 PM
My truck started without the VAM plugged in one time. Would barely rev past 2000 rpm though. I tried it on purpose one other time though and no luck with it starting. Who knows.

Whens the MS go on it?

AJ_Fritz
11-18-2008, 04:17 PM
not sure yet ive still got a bundle of wires run for it. still not sure what i want to do. i couldnt use the edis wheel because it is a single belt pully and i need the double right now. the squirt is already set up for edis and i dont want to change it. ive still got a chip for the LA3 in it so i think i'll play with that over the winter and come spring and i'll slide a built engine in it. i sure would like to scramble this one first. i might run dual fuel and dual ecu's too. use the squirt for propane.

D94R
11-19-2008, 01:37 PM
did you set up the MS to directly control the EDIS ignition instead of using the Hall affect circuit to control the EDIS module?

AJ_Fritz
11-24-2008, 04:34 PM
i set it up to control the module but also bought the stuff to directly control the coils.

finally got the hangers built for the exhaust and all the leaks fixed.

AJ_Fritz
12-09-2008, 04:35 PM
got the intercooler welded up over the weekend. got the intercooler to TB charge pipe built but need to finish the turbo to intercooler charge pipe yet. working on getting the intercooler fixed to the front of the engine tonight. its still a top mount and its still 2 TC IC's but i am working on making it a shaker. :)

i plan on getting it back in the garage here this week. i'll be disassembling the header and fixing some stuff. i'll get some pics then. been real busy with the B2 and the stang got put on the back burner. weather and the flu has been kicking my a$$.

AJ_Fritz
04-09-2009, 01:36 PM
well i made a couple scores at the JY. picked up both quarter windows off of a 91 notch back and a almost perfect pass side door. zero rust on the door to boot. finding one of them in ohio is near impossible. little crumpled on the front where they opened the door into the fender but nothing a hammer and dolly cant straighten out. also picked up the matching window trim. got a set of manual locking hubs for the B2.

$40 for the the windows and trim, $100 for the door complete, and $30 for the hubs. WOOT!

AJ_Fritz
05-19-2009, 07:25 PM
got one door hung and both quarter windows in. still got an ass load of body work to do but its starting to shape up.

needed some motivation so i buttoned her up under the hood and took her out for a spin. wastegates set for 10 psi and it makes that in first gear so the paired header is doing its job. didn't have enough slope in the oil drain line the first time i put it together and had to clean the charge pipes and burn all the oil out of the exhaust system. it cleaned up though ;). the hx40 is one wicked sounding turbocharger under load. that thing whistles and howls like no other though the 4in cutout. cant wait to start cranking the fuker up!

nagelandy55
05-19-2009, 09:43 PM

trying to have it ready to plate and insure before this weekend.

AJ_Fritz
06-21-2009, 10:25 PM
man what a weekend... to get absofukinlutely nothing done. :hehe:

here's what i got accomplished. :yikes:

pulled the cluster out and fixed my tach had a broke wire in it. soldered that up. works great. went back to the stocker with no boost gauge.

hooked up the plx r300 wide band o2 controller.

put in a check valve so it would stop sneezing out the heater / A/C controls. man that was annoying.

turned the pressure regulator around so i could get more then 10 psi out of the wastegate. damn that was annoying too. must have had a brain  fart when i hooked it up the first time. didnt even look at the damn arrow on it lmao. then i cranked the regulator up to 12 psi. 20 psi boost rock solid... with one of Jesse's external wastegates i might add. thank you very much Jesse!

found something out with the new walbro 255lph HP/HV fuel pump i got from summit. works awesome! no more running out of fuel just when the fun starts. confirmed it with the wideband... it pulls high 10's all the way to redline now.

the hx40... its a beast!:peelout: no surge yet, but i only put about 5 miles on her. still have a slight problem with the oil drain on it. it is still puffing a little oil out the exhaust when its cold. i think i am just going to have to go to the bigger SS natural gas line. it likes to blow charge pipes off at the boots. wouldnt ya know it the only one i didnt bead roll and it blew it right the hell off :conf45:

did i mention it howls like a banshee..... it even scoots blowing threw a 3" high flow cat and a full length exhaust system. the fun really start when you uncork her and slap her on the ass though! cant wait to driver it to work tomorrow!!!!!:badidea: its going to be one of these :peelout: followed by one of these :didimiss:

still need to get the drivers side power window switches and get my dash pad customized so i can mount all my gauges in it. then its hooking up the AMS boost controller. followed by the water/meth. then maybe a j3 chip mass air conversion and injectors. somewhere in there i'll get my subframe connectors in.

worked on her a little more today. been talking to jess a little to much and decided to go with getting the water injection hooked up first. spent about 4 hours making stainless injector bosses for the multi port upper i made earlier. also welded up some 1/2 stainless square tube for the water rail. ive got a stainless pressure regulator i am going to use on it but i need to fab up a stainless flange for it. looks very nice. i'll get some pics when i get it mounted.

wasted some more time on it last week finishing up the water/meth fuel rail. turned out sweet but still in the process of reloading this damn computer and havent got the software load to get the pics of the camera. got to wait till the end of the month to see if i got enough change for the water/meth pump. property taxes and a roof on the house are going to kill me this month.

got the blow off valve mounted up too yesterday and all the interior door panels back on need to make some covers up for the new power window/lock switches.

after that it's off to the gauges and fabing up a dash cover for them.

Have you done any reading about using just straight methanol instead of the 50/50 mix. I have read also that you just need at least 49% methanol and the more the better. They have a real big thread on this on devils own site. So you are using 14lb stock ranger injectors on top. This looks damn good. Definately haven't seen anything like this out there. Makes me wonder about taking two ranger intakes and cutting them both behind the fuel rail and welding them together, and doing a super intake.

Thedrifter

why not just drill and add? vs cutting and welding

jfive
01-03-2010, 10:31 PM
you would also have to build pedistals for the fuel rail to mount, which i guess wouldn't be to hard, but I was just saying what came to mind when I saw what aj did, as far as the rangers intake being different. I was also thinking it would work best on the newer intakes. I don't have a drill press or alot of things that would make something custom be easy, so I usally think of what would be easiest for me, with what I do have.

AJ_Fritz

next season is here any even more changes in the works. stay tuned true believers.

finally got it running right again, needed a tune up and the base ignition timing set. first time its run right since i installed the wideband. its running lean anything above 16psi and 5000 rpm. guess i do know how to port a head :p

trying out a set of autolite iridium xp103 spark plugs, i must say i like em. they are one range colder. ive got about 2 tanks though her so i'll give em a pull soon and see how they look.

AJ_Fritz
01-31-2012, 07:06 PM
had a three day trash putting the notch back to stock and getting ready to sell her. shes been a good car.

took all the fun stuff off and and going to sell them so keep an eye out in the for sale section if your interested in some one-offs.

the car still has the ported head on it but now has a rebuilt T3 (.48 hot side) w/ an E3 manifold, non intercooled. 3in exhaust to the bumper no muffler or cat. new struts, shock, new tires, going to put the A/C pump back on and fix the cruise control.

car is still solid but has a few dents. some rust no holes though.

Ron83ranger
02-01-2012, 12:34 PM
huh, this is the first time ive seen this thread. nice work there, AJ. you did exactly what i had wanted to do with my 2 stock turbocoupe intercoolers. i still have them too. i like the water injection rail. looks just like a fuel rail. its a shame you cant see the header for the turbo, but the heat shield is pretty cool. and yeah its is cramped in there, or at least it was.

AJ_Fritz
02-01-2012, 04:18 PM
ron this is the first time ive run a e3-6 manifold on a 2.3. all i can say is i wont be doing it again. it run better with the hx40 and the paired header and spooled almost as fast. i never new how flat the manifolds felt. i now for a fact this thing is now a 200 to the wheels car now. even pushing 20psi it feels like your swimming in a vacuum. it makes boost fine it just doesnt do much with it...
