View Full Version : DP head question (Hey, Jesse !)

Valves and valve seats. The turbo heads have upgraded valve materials to handle the extra heat - stainless? Are the turbo seats inserts or were they induction-hardened? The DP heads were intended to make ~100hp (sic) so I wouldn't expect to find turbo-grade materials.
So my question is for you guys that are running DP heads, how are the valves & seats holding up, and have you made any changes? Jesse, are you using the stock valves & seats...?!
I'm starting to think about replacing my valves and seats for longevity.

all ford heads that run unleaded fuels have stainless valves and induction hardened valve seats unless it is an aluminum head then it has pressed in seats. there is no difference between turbo and N/A heads except casting designs.

I am running Boports large valves. Just had the head cut for the big valves and never had a problem.

Thanks Jesse, that's what I thought.
AJ, I have the impression that the turbo exhaust valves are a different material. Perhaps not Inconel, but a better grade of stainless?
*edit* Ah- here it is (http://www.turboford.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=046299#000002). "Nimonic80" I have that SAE paper, maybe I should read it :conf45:
*edit again*
There are some good materials articles at www.enginebuildermag.com. They suggest that our regular production exhaust valves are 21-2N austenitic, (maybe =EV5?).

If you don't go oversize, just get a set of exhaust valves out of a turbo head and drop those in - that's what I did on one of my DP engines. I wouldn't (and didn't) worry about the intakes.

Thanks, that's a great tip for early heads. :cheers2:
I'm using the late head.

You could still go this route with the later head. Just put the larger size guides, rollers and valves in on the exhaust side. Obviously this is a little more involved, but it's sorta my plan if I ever go with the later head.

oh, DING! I just caught on. Convert JUST the exhaust....my brain just melted. That's brilliant. I need some time to digest the idea. Thanks!
