Just figured i'd get a thread going on how to break in an engine. I don't know a lot about it but hopefully some of the more experienced members will chime in.
When i broke my engine in the first time i just took it for a nice long drive using the whole rpm range, not boosting too much and no free reving.
I've heard that you can glaze the cylinder walls if you set the boost pressure too high for the first little while. I was wondering if someone could expand on this.
Thanks.
I broke it in how by doing low rpm, high gear pulls up hill. Need heat and pressure in the cylinders to seat the rings and not glaze the walls.
I'd get the truck to temp, get into third gear, keep the rpms about 2,000 (any lower and it'd be lugging it up hill), keep boost at 5psi or less, and climb the hill 20 or 30 times. (seriously, but then again the hill was right next to the house and it was a country road).
Then, continue the break in how you plan to drive it. I broke my last engine in by taking it to the strip lol. This engine was running strong as hell right up till I tried to convince my truck it was a boat :(

well breaking in an engine just depends who you talk to. there is a lot of debate on how to do it properly. like the text book answer is for the first 1000 miles use the mid to lower power band, not going over 1/2 throttle but varying the rpms, like going down the road and going from 45mph to 60mph every little bit. and after the first 500 miles change the oil b/c there will be metal shavings in the oil from the machineing process. from the 1000 mile break in the book says ready to go and do what you want.
but noone wants to take their new toy on a cross country trip to break in their engine. then there is the quick way that after the first 250miles change the oil and then you are free to run the heck out of it.
but do it how you want just take it easy for the first little bit, how long is up to you .

the way my friends dad did it on his motors he built was started it up and let it idle for about 5 minutes then he killed it, then he would wait like 30 minutes checking to see if anything was leaking or loose then start it up and let it idle again for like 10 minutes, then shut it off check everything then wait another 10 to 15 and start it and slowly drive it around town and after about 100 miles then he would blast into the gas...
so thats my input on it, also including the oil changes also that were needed

hasting has a break in procedure with their ring packs. the short of it is run the sh!t out of it and then be nice for a bit. dont let it overheat and vary the engine speed for the first 100 miles. they want at least three hard pulls followed by 3 cool down cruises. then they say they should be seated.
drive like its stolen!
