Default The Shack

tl;dr? I build a f___ing barn, a$$holes.

So yah. Been AWOL mostly since like last fall. Work, kids school, kids, wife's school, then holidays, etc etc all ate my time.

So since I barely had time to take a shit I decide to finally sell the house in Utah. FINALLY. After that CF of going into contract 3 times, then running out of "cushion" fund to keep floating it on the market without income from it I had to go back to renting it out... and then an investor came along and bought it just as I signed the contract for new tentants... so in the end it was Win, Win, Win for me and him.

So, I make a few bucks on the house, and still with ZERO time to do much of anything what do I decide to do? Build a ****ing barn, that's what I decide to do.

Well, no, I didn't build it. Other people built it
But I paid for it and the "built not bought" crowd can kiss my tired ass

I've always wanted a barn for the space and to be able to put a 2 post lift in there. The third garage bay and scissor lift were adequate, but come cold season I always had to stack shit on the Ranger for storage and it became depressing. The last two summers she stayed buried because I didn't have the time, nor will power to dig her out of her hole and work on her. So I'm hoping that changes real quick.

The barn is 36x54x14. The intentions is for my "shop" to have a place to work on the Ranger, the rustang, etc. Or I might just film amateur orgy porn in there ... not sure yet.

EDIT: Had to remove imbedded images. Think I was killing the bandwidth for the hosting site, damnit.

WOW, congrats! That is friggin heeeuge.

I am also building a barn, or rather Blitz is building it for me and I am writing the checks because time and equipment...

Mine is only 30x48x12
They started building Wed morning, and shell was completed Thurs at lunchtime

Concrete next week. Electric and overhead doors shortly thereafter

EDIT, If anyone can explain to me why some of my uploads are upside down, I have 2 more pics to add. I just lost 40mins of my life fighting with the uploader...

The electrical and overhead installs I'm handling myself.
What is your reasoning for height? I debated 12' with scissor trusses but it was cheaper to go 14' with traditional trusses.

I also wanted to go 40x60 but the cost of trusses jumps a lot once you get wider than 30' so 36x54 was a good compromise for me.

I also see yours is constructed much the same as mine. Roof purlins on edge. I had so many builders balk at that.

Blitz is building it but is it a Menards (Midwest Manufacturing) building? The construction is near identical to mine minus the 6x6 posts (mine are laminated posts)

And... on my phone the attached images appear in my browser. On my comps (all of them) they show the broken picture icon.

Using Chrome on phone and comps... WTF.

ETA: updated Chrome on comp and broken image icon is now gone. Image doesn't show unless clicking the attached image. I guess that's some sort of progress.

I should be getting the same barn from Menards next year actually (well Hopefully). Comes out the cheapest of any "kit" building I can find. Do you like it? Does it actually come with everything needed in the price that the the online builder spits out? Mine will be much smaller 24x32 but either 12 or 14 ft whichever a 2 post will fit.

I do like it. Do some searching to see if you can find a all-in-one builder. The reason I bought the kit was I couldn't find a builder that wasn't booked till end of August so I was gonna DIY (thank god I didn't, I'd still be setting poles!) and then a builder got free'd up.

What you save in material costs because of the 8' or 9' on centers of the trusses you make up in labor costs. Those on-edge purlins on the roof are time consuming as I found out.

I debated windows and opted out at first. However I'm going to add some in. Coming up the road there is zero curb appeal since it now blocks my house from one direction.

Costs per their site were dead on. I took advantage of the 11% rebate timing to purchase it. Ended up getting $1480 back in store credit so I used that to get a bunch of wiring stuff. The rest will likely go towards windows.
There is also no break in price because you buy it as a kit, so if you only buy stuff as piece meal it's the same overall price.

For the ceiling height, go with whatever the lift requires, but 14' is a safe bet.

24 really isn't that deep. About as deep as a standard garage. So any fullsize truck will have trouble tucking all the way in if you have anything against the wall. Just food for thought.

I've added a couple pics of the skeleton for y'alls.

I dunno if it is a Menards kit, or not. It showed up on a Blitz truck. I have heard they get kits from the same place, but spent zero time researching that. Blitz had the best turn-key price, and I felt comfortable with the sales guy, so they got my money.

My 12' is inside height. Shopping 7-9k clear floor asymmetric lifts, most all will clear a 12' ceiling.

You are correct, I just wanted the extra piece of mind and headache involved with hanging lights @ 14ft

I debated slightly smaller and going 16ft so I could put a mezzanine in. But I opted for more foot print and knew it would be a long time before I could finish a mez off and knew it would collect junk, spider webs, and mouse shit.

Here's the results of the lights I hung. LED T8's. I went cheap with china strips and lamps, but the bulbs are replaceable with any style of LED-bypass bulb.

The difference in the exterior shots is one set of lights on vs all of them on. Quite the difference.

Thanks for the info. Im sorta stuck at 24ft just because of where I want to put it. I have a large shed and my regular garage, so I dont need anything massive that will take up my whole yard. I only have .5 acre now so I just want something that I can work on the truck in and be able to use my attached garage to actually park my car in.

I have the same T8 LEDS in my garage and its awesome how bright it is now. Looks very nice. I cannot wait to build mine.

Ill check out Blitz. I ultimately would love to save the money and DIY it, but I know itll take me 2 months to put it up. There are also quite a few amish built buildings up here, so I was going to look into that.
